AI Visibility

Track, analyze, and optimize how various AI chatbots recommend, evaluate, and cite your brand and competitors across customized prompts.

Written by Victoria

AI Visibility in Mentionlytics allows you to understand what LLMs are saying about your industry, your brand and your competitors, and which pages they cite when they make those claims.

It helps you:

  1. See if AI recommends your brand or your competitors.

  2. Find the questions your brand appears in.

  3. Understand if AI talks positively or negatively about your brand.

  4. See which pages AI is using to generate those answers, so you know what to improve.

The platform runs a set of prompts — questions that real users would ask an AI chatbot. You decide which prompts to track, based on your brand and goals. The platform then runs them across multiple AI models, collects the answers, and does two things: first, a simple count of how often your brand appears.

Then a much deeper analysis of what's actually being said. The two layers map to the dashboards: Visibility on AI Visibility: Overview, the deeper analysis on AI Visibility: Answer Analysis and AI Visibility: Citation Analysis.

Availability and cost - AI Visibility is priced per prompt, on top of your plan. It is not available on the Basic plan.

Setup Walkthrough

Step 1 — Brands & Competitors

First, we tell the system which brands to focus on — yours and any competitors you want to track. The platform will look for these names inside every AI answer it collects.

Go to Settings → Brands and click + Add Brand.

  • Choose what you are adding: Your Brand or A Competitor.

  • Type the brand name or keyword and click Analyze — AI fills in the details for you.

  • Each saved brand holds a Name, Subtitle, Website, color, Aliases, and social profiles. Aliases matter: you can set whether a brand is recognised when an answer refers to it by another name, so add the spellings and short forms your market actually uses.

Step 2 — Adding a Prompt

The next step is to start adding prompts in the system.

In the Mention Trackers box on your dashboard, hover the section you want (Brand Monitoring, Competitors or Industry & Topics) and click Add on the right of the row. (The Add Keyword/Tracker button at the top of the box opens the same wizard.)

Then choose Monitor a Prompt for AI Visibility.

How to add a prompt

The wizard has the following steps: Mention Tracker Category → Mention Tracker Name → Prompt to monitor → Sources & Regional, followed by a Complete confirmation screen.

1. Name your Mention Tracker.

Pick the Section (we recommend Industry & Topics for prompts), give the tracker a name and a color. A Mention Tracker is simply a folder — there is no separate step to create one first.

To add a prompt to a folder you already built, use Add to existing Mention Tracker instead.

Note: Use separate trackers for general, branded and negative prompts — and keep branded prompts apart in particular. Branded prompts ask about you by name, so you almost always appear in the answer. Leaving them in the selection inflates Brand Visibility and Share of Voice dramatically. Untick your branded tracker before reading those two metrics.

2. Enter your AI Prompt.

  • Country — the country of the “user” asking the question. It defaults to the country of the account, so change it to your preference.

  • Type of Prompt — Informational, Instructional, Comparative or Transactional. It defaults to Transactional. (See "The 4 Types of Prompts" below.)

  • Multiple prompts — toggle this on to add several prompts to the same tracker at once. Each one still counts as a separate prompt.

  • The prompt text itself, between 5 and 2000 characters — or click Generate Popular Prompt Ideas and pick from the AI suggestion

Location: You need to set a country in the prompt, because AI chatbots give different answers depending on where the question is being asked from. So when you set up a prompt, you also pick a location — we're essentially mimicking a user asking from that country. If you operate in multiple countries, you might want to add the same prompt multiple times, one for each country you would like to see results for.

3. Limit Results to Source.

The final step sets how often the prompt runs and which engines answer it.

  • Prompt Frequency — Daily, 2 times per day, or 4 times per day.

  • LLM / AI Sources — tick the engines you want (see below).

Scan Frequency is the number of times the prompt is asked in each LLM. The default is Daily; you can also choose 2 or 4 times per day. AI answers change during the day, so a higher frequency gives you a truer picture.

Keep in mind that increasing the scans per day consumes more prompts.

Frequency availability: 1× daily in every tier · 2× from Advanced · 4× on Business & Enterprise.

4. Complete. Review the summary and click Complete. The first answers are collected on the next scheduled run, so allow up to 24 hours before reading the dashboards. You can edit or delete a prompt later from its tracker in the Mention Trackers box.

The 4 Types of Prompts

Type

Example

What to look at

Informational

"Best budget airlines in Europe"

Visibility & Share of Voice — do you appear?

Instructional

“How do I monitor my brand on social media?”

Is your product named as the recommended way to do it, or only the category?

Comparative

"Ryanair vs easyJet"

How do you stack up against competitors?

Transactional

"What is the price for a Ryanair ticket?"

Is the AI citing correct, up-to-date information?

💡 Tip for branded prompts: if you already ask about the brand, visibility doesn't tell you much. The insight is in the SENTIMENT. What is the AI actually saying about you?

LLM Sources

Available models:

  • ChatGPT

  • Gemini

  • Google AI Overview

  • Google AI Mode

  • Copilot

  • Perplexity

💡 The first four LLMs are available to all plans. Copilot and Perplexity are available to Business and Enterprise Plans.

The AI Visibility dashboards

Here is where the results will start formulating the picture.

To navigate to the AI Visibility dashboard, go to the menu, find Dashboards and choose one of the three AI Visibility entries, or you can also find them in the full list of Dashboards (the 3 dots near the date selector).

When you open an AI Visibility dashboard, the Channel filter is set to LLM automatically and the Mention Trackers selection is reset to include all prompts. A small notice confirms this. Untick any trackers you want to exclude (e.g. branded prompts) after the dashboard loads.

There are three separate dashboards, the AI Visibility: Overview, AI Visibility: Answer Analysis and AI Visibility: Citation Analysis.

 AI Visibility dashboards

AI Visibility: Overview — are you in the answer at all?

This dashboard answers the first question; how often does each brand show up? It is organised in four blocks: AI Brand Visibility change over time; AI Visibility Overview (Brand Visibility and Brand Visibility Overview); Visibility Analysis (Brand Visibility, Brand Visibility per LLM, Brand Visibility per Prompt); and Citation Sources Analysis.

  • AI Brand Visibility change over time — the share of answers mentioning each brand, day by day. Catch rises and dips early. Switch between Day, Week, Month, Quarter and Year views.

  • Brand Visibility Overview — your headline numbers and the metric table below.

Brand Visibility Overview

Metric

What it means

How to explain it

Brand Visibility

% of answers where the brand appeared

"Out of all the questions we asked, how often did your brand show up in the answer?"

Share of Voice

Normalised % vs all tracked brands (0–100)

"Of all the brands that appeared in answers, what slice belongs to you?"

Avg. Sentiment

Score from -1 (worst) to +1 (best)

"When the AI does mention you, is it saying good or bad things?"

Avg. Rank

Position the brand appears within the answer

"The lower the number, the better — a rank of 2 means you're typically the 2nd brand mentioned."

Mentions

Answers where the brand appears at least once

“How many AI answers you turned up in.”

Total Appearances

Times the brand is named across those answers

“Ryanair is popular because Ryanair offers low prices” is one mention, two appearances.

Avg. Appearances

How many times per answer the brand appears

"Not just whether you're there, but how prominently you feature."

Reading these numbers: compare the percentage, not the raw count. Appearing in 70 out of 70 answers (100%) is a stronger result than appearing in 80 out of 95 (84%), even though 80 is the bigger number. And untick branded prompts first, or Visibility and Share of Voice will read far too high.

  • Brand Visibility per LLM — compare ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini side-by-side to find where you lead or fall behind.

  • Brand Visibility per Prompt - uncover what buyers ask, from “best tool for…” to “worst alternatives”. Fix negative prompts and turn missing ones into content.

Head-to-head comparison: Compare your presence inside AI answers to see where you’re losing market share.

  • Citation Sources Analysis — a first look at the domains and URLs behind the answers, covered in full further down.

Brand Visibility per LLM

AI Visibility: Answer Analysis — why you were mentioned

The second dashboard opens with two orientation widgets — Brands % Visibility in the answers and Brand Visibility per Prompt — followed by the Answer Analysis block with four graphs.

For every answer the AI gives, we go deeper and extract WHY your brand was mentioned. What products or features did it point to? Essentially — what is the AI using as its reason to recommend you?

AI Visibility: Answer Analysis

  • Products/Services appearing in the answers — the key topics and selling points AI associates with your brand.

  • People appearing in the Answers — not people named in the answer, but the authors, bloggers, influencers and Reddit posters whose content fed it. These are your outreach targets.

  • Companies appearing in answers — any company, not just the brands you track. A good way to discover competitors you had not thought to add.

  • Top Domains Cited in Answers — the sources behind this dashboard’s answers.

AI Visibility: Citation Analysis — where the answers come from

This is the section where you can actually take action. We show you the exact domains and URLs the LLMs are pulling from when they answer these prompts. So if AlternativeAirlines.com keeps appearing as a citation, that tells you: get your brand mentioned on that site. Write a blog, reach out, get listed — because that's what the AI is reading.

You can even break it down by LLM. So if ChatGPT is the dominant chatbot in your target market, you can see exactly which sources ChatGPT trusts — and focus your content and PR efforts there.

We show you the exact domains and URLs feeding AI answers. Know which pages to pitch for a link, or which Reddit threads to join, to win the citation and increase your AI Visibility. In more detail:

  • Domains used as sources for AI replies — focus on domains ranked by how often each domain feeds an answer.

  • Top Citation domains per Prompt — the domains cited most for each individual question, so you know which page to go after for which query.

  • Brand Visibility per LLM — the same engine-by-engine comparison as on the Overview dashboard, repeated here for context.

  • Source domain citation per LLM — see the exact pages AI pulls from and pitch your product to be included directly in those articles.

  • Top URLS for Citation — learn exactly which sources, articles, and Reddit threads to influence so AI tells the right story about your product.

  • Top Citation Domains over time — see which sources influence specific AI models and monitor how citation shares shift over time to catch rising platforms early.
