Parking Enforcement Charges — Why They Happen & What To Do

To keep Dublin’s streets safe, accessible, and compliant with local authority rules, MOBY enforces parking rules across all rides.

Written by Barry Sweeney

If a bike is parked incorrectly, left outside permitted areas, or submitted with an invalid parking photo, a parking enforcement charge or serious violation charge may apply.

Understanding Parking Enforcement Charges

MOBY operates under local authority parking requirements designed to:

  • Keep footpaths and public spaces accessible

  • Prevent obstruction for pedestrians and wheelchair users

  • Ensure bikes are parked responsibly

  • Reduce abandoned or improperly parked bikes

Parking enforcement charges help cover the operational costs of recovering, relocating, or manually reviewing incorrectly parked bikes.

€6 Parking Enforcement Charge

A €6 parking enforcement charge may apply when a bike is not parked correctly at a public bike stand inside a valid green parking zone.

Examples include:

  • Parking against lamp posts, poles, railings, fences, or street furniture

  • Parking on private property

  • Blocking footpaths, ramps, entrances, or accessibility access

  • Parking significantly away from a nearby public bike stand

  • Ending a ride outside a designated public bike stand area

  • Submitting an invalid, unclear, dark, or incomplete parking photo

A valid parking photo must clearly show:

  • The full bike

  • The bike parked correctly at a public bike stand

  • The bike not obstructing footpaths, entrances, ramps, or public access

  • Enough surrounding context to identify the location

  • A clear, well-lit image

€30 Serious Violation Charge

A €30 serious violation charge may apply for more severe or repeated misuse, including:

  • Leaving a bike in a red zone

  • Leaving a bike in a No Go-Zone

  • Abandoning a bike outside the operating or green parking zone

  • Repeated parking violations

  • Repeated invalid parking photo submissions

  • Behaviour requiring operational bike recovery or manual intervention

Repeated misuse may also result in:

  • Account restrictions

  • Temporary suspension

  • Permanent removal from the platform

Common Reasons Charges Are Applied

Most parking enforcement charges happen because:

  • The bike was not parked at a public bike stand

  • The parking photo did not clearly show correct parking

  • The bike was left obstructing public access

  • The ride was ended outside a permitted parking area

Always check the app map before ending your ride.

How to Avoid Parking Enforcement Charges

Before ending your ride, make sure:

  • You are inside a green parking zone

  • You are parked at a public bike stand shown in the app

  • The bike is parked safely and does not obstruct pedestrians or accessibility access

  • Your parking photo clearly shows the bike and surrounding stand area

  • You remain beside the bike until the ride fully ends

What Happens If You Receive a Charge?

If a parking enforcement charge is applied:

  • The charge may appear automatically on your payment method or wallet

  • You may receive an email or in-app notification explaining the reason

  • The ride and parking photo may be reviewed by MOBY operations systems and support staff

I Think the Charge Was Applied Incorrectly

If you believe a charge was applied in error, contact support and include:

  • Your account email or phone number

  • The approximate ride time

  • The bike number

  • Any screenshots or additional information that may help review the case

Our team will review the ride logs, GPS data, and parking photo.

Important Reminder

Parking rules are set by local authorities and are strictly enforced.

All MOBY bikes must:

  • Be parked at public bike stands

  • Remain clear of footpaths and accessibility access

  • Be ended inside valid parking zones

  • Be submitted with a valid parking photo

Failure to follow these rules may result in parking enforcement charges or account restrictions.
