How to Park Correctly & Avoid Fines

To keep Dublin’s streets safe, accessible, and compliant with local authority rules, all MOBY riders must park correctly at the end of each ride.

Written by Barry Sweeney

Incorrect parking, invalid parking photos, or leaving bikes outside permitted parking areas may result in parking enforcement charges or account restrictions.

Quick Parking Checklist

Before ending your ride, make sure all of the following are true:

✔ You are inside a green parking zone
✔ You are parked at a public bike (Sheffield) stand shown in the app
✔ The bike is tethered and locked to the stand using the combination lock
✔ You submit a clear photo showing the bike locked
✔ You end the ride while standing beside the bike

1. Where You Can Park (Map Zones Explained)

The in-app map shows where you can ride, pause, and end your trip.

Zone colours are important.

Green Zone - Parking allowed
This is the only area where you can end your ride

You must:

  • Park at a public bike stand within a green zone

  • Lock the bike securely to the stand

  • Submit a valid parking photo

  • You must park at a public bike stand within a green zone

When browsing without an active ride, only green zones are shown

Once a ride starts, "P" markers appear showing exact bike stand locations

White / Clear Zone - Riding only

You may ride through these areas, but:

  • You cannot end your ride here

Red Zone - No parking

You may ride through red zones, but:

  • You can pause your ride here (if you have enough battery)

  • You cannot end your ride here

Leaving a bike in a red zone may result in a €30 serious violation charge.

Light Blue Zone — Paid Parking

Ending your ride here applies an additional parking fee.

Examples may include:

  • Airports

  • Premium parking areas

Dark Blue Zone — Discount Parking

End your ride here to receive discounted pricing or promotional incentives where available.

No Go-Zones

You cannot take bikes into these areas.

Examples may include:

  • Dollymount Strand

  • South Wall

  • Parts of West Dublin

If a ride is paused inside a No Go-Zone:

  • The bike may automatically lock

  • You may be unable to continue your ride

  • You will need to contact support for assistance

Leaving a bike in a No Go-Zone may result in a €30 serious violation charge.

2. How to Park Properly

Always park at a public bike stand

Only park at public bike (Sheffield) stands shown in the app.

Do not park:

  • Against poles

  • Against fences or railings

  • Against gates or walls

  • On private property

  • In a way that blocks footpaths, ramps, entrances, or public access

Parking away from a nearby public bike stand may result in a parking enforcement charge.

Lock the Bike Securely

Use the combination lock to secure the bike frame to the public stand.

The lock code is shown in as the bike name in the app (for example: “Lock Code 1234”)

Make sure:

  • The combination lock is properly secured

  • The bike is stable

If the Stand Is Full

Use the next closest public bike stand shown on your map during your active ride.

Tethering

You may lock one MOBY bike to another only if the other bike is already correctly parked at a public bike stand

Parking Enforcement Charges

A €6 parking enforcement charge may apply if a bike is:

  • Not parked at a public bike stand

  • Locked to poles, fences, railings, or street furniture

  • Left on private property

  • Blocking pedestrians or accessibility access

  • Parked significantly away from a nearby public bike stand

  • Submitted with an invalid or unclear parking photo

Repeated parking violations or serious misuse may result in:

  • €30 serious violation charges

  • Account restrictions

  • Suspension from the platform

3. Ending Your Ride in the App (Step by Step)

  1. Stay beside the bike with the app open

  2. Tap “End My Ride” in the app

  3. Lock the bike to the public stand using the combination lock

  4. Take a clear photo showing the bike locked to the stand

  5. Submit the photo

Your ride will only end after:

  • The photo is accepted

  • You receive ride completion confirmation in the app

Do not walk away until you receive confirmation that your ride has ended successfully.

4. Parking Photo Requirements

Your parking photo must clearly show:

  • The bike locked to a public bike stand

  • Enough surrounding context to identify the stand

  • A clear, well-lit image (use flash at night)

Do not submit:

  • Blurry photos

  • Dark photos

  • Close-up photos that do not show the stand

  • Photos taken before the bike is locked

MOBY uses automated and manual checks to verify parking compliance.

If your photo does not clearly show correct parking at a public bike stand, a €6 parking enforcement charge may apply.

Repeated invalid parking photo submissions may result in €30 serious violation charges or account restrictions

5. Important Rules to Remember

  • All rides must end inside a green zone

  • All parking must be at public bike stands shown in the app

  • Parking at poles, fences, railings, or private property is not allowed

  • You must submit a valid parking photo

  • You must remain beside the bike while ending your ride

  • Bikes must never obstruct footpaths or accessibility access

Failure to follow these rules may result in parking enforcement charges or account restrictions.

6. If the App Does Not Work

If you experience issues ending your ride:

  1. Close the app completely

  2. Wait 15 seconds

  3. Reopen the app and try again

Remain beside the bike until the ride has ended successfully.

Summary

✔ Park only at public bike stands
✔ The stand must be inside a green parking zone
✔ Lock the bike securely to the stand
✔ Submit a clear parking photo
✔ Remain beside the bike while ending your ride

Following these steps helps keep Dublin accessible, avoids operational issues, and prevents parking enforcement charges.
