Microphone Permissions Troubleshooting

Written by Dr. Harvinder Power

Overview

If Motics can't hear you or no transcript is produced, it's usually a browser permission or device selection issue. Follow the steps below for your browser.

Google Chrome (recommended)

  1. When you click Start Recording in New Session, Chrome will display a pop-up asking for microphone access — click Allow.

  2. If you accidentally blocked permission, click the padlock icon in the address bar, then select Site settings.

  3. Under Microphone, change the setting to Allow.

  4. Reload the page and try again.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Firefox will ask for permission via a pop-up when you start recording — click Allow.

  2. If the prompt doesn't appear, click the padlock icon near the address bar, then adjust permissions via Page Info → Permissions tab.

  3. Set Microphone to Allow and reload the page.

Apple Safari

  1. Safari prompts for microphone access when you start recording. Click Allow.

  2. To adjust manually: go to Safari → Settings → Websites → Microphone and set your Motics site to Allow.

  3. Restart Safari to apply the changes.

Microsoft Edge

  1. Edge displays a permission prompt when you start recording — click Allow.

  2. If issues persist, click the padlock icon next to the URL and verify that the Microphone setting is set to Allow.

Pick the correct device

  1. In New Session, open the device selector and choose your mic.

  2. Use test mode to confirm levels and clarity.

  3. You can also set a default mic in Settings → General.

Other checks

  • Ensure your operating system privacy settings allow the browser to access the microphone (macOS: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone).

  • Close other apps that might be using the mic (e.g. Zoom, Teams, FaceTime).

  • Try a different USB port if using an external microphone.
