What is Energy Expenditure and how do I adjust it?

Control how your daily calorie goal is calculated

Updated this week

Energy expenditure is the amount of energy (calories) your body uses throughout the day for basic functions like breathing and circulation, as well as for movement and exercise. In the app, it helps determine your daily calorie goal and how it’s calculated, depending on your selected settings:

  • If you like having a static calorie goal number, use the Estimation mode, which excludes workout calories and factors activity level you specify in the onboarding quiz. With this mode, you aim to eat the same fixed number of calories each day, regardless of how active you are, since you’ve already specified your activity level during the onboarding quiz.

  • If you prefer your calorie goal to include workouts calories, use the Activity Tracking mode. With this mode, your calorie goal starts lower but increases each time you log an activity, meaning you’re encouraged to eat back the calories you burn through exercise. Because your activity level can change daily, your calorie goal will also vary from day to day. For example, if your goal is 1,200 calories and you burn 400 calories walking, your new goal will update to 1,600 calories after logging that activity.

Your calculated daily calorie count already includes the calorie deficit in both modes if you choose the goal to lose weight in the onboarding quiz.
You can change the Energy Expenditure mode in your Profile settings:

  1. Tap the person icon 👤 on the upper-left of the main screen.

  2. Scroll down to "Energy Expenditure" and tap it.

  3. Select the desired calculation mode.

Once enabled, the app will automatically adjust your daily calorie goal.
