At myHSA, we aim to ensure you have access to a wide range of health services while maximizing your benefits. We understand that navigating the specifics of eligible claims can sometimes be challenging, so we want to clarify an important aspect regarding services provided by practitioners who are still in training.

Did you know that you can claim services rendered by a practitioner who is in the process of completing their practicum or is “qualifying,” even if they are not yet fully licensed? As long as the session is supervised by an eligible Registered Practitioner, these services are eligible for coverage under your plan.

Disclaimer: Always check the "list of covered items" on your dashboard to make sure that the items discussed in this article are listed on your individual company plan. If you would like us to verify that these items are eligible for your specific plan, please reach out to support@getmyhsa.com or start a live chat with us!

How It Works

  1. Supervised Sessions: The practicum practitioner, such as a psychology intern or a qualifying psychologist who has not yet graduated, can conduct therapy sessions or other health services.

  2. Supervising Practitioner: These sessions must be supervised by a Registered Practitioner.

  3. Invoice Requirements: For the claim to be valid, the invoice must include the credentials of the supervising Registered Practitioner. This means their name, qualifications, and registration details should be clearly listed alongside the details of the practicum practitioner.

Consider a therapy session conducted by a psychology intern who has not yet graduated. As long as the session is supervised by a Registered Psychologist, and the invoice clearly states the supervising psychologist’s name and credentials, you can claim this session under your health benefits.

This approach allows you to access valuable services from practitioners in training while ensuring the oversight and quality assurance provided by a registered professional. It also supports the professional growth of future registered practitioners by giving them practical experience under supervision.

We hope this clarifies how you can make the most of your HSA when seeing practitioners in training. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact our support team at support@getmyhsa.com or start a live chat!
