At myHSA, we want to ensure you have all the information you need in order to get reimbursed for the important services in your life. Here’s a straightforward guide on how to claim Behavioural Assessments and Therapy services using your Health Spending Account (HSA).

Eligible Practitioners

Behavioural therapy and assessments can be reimbursed through your HSA when performed by eligible practitioners, including:

  • Psychologists

    • In most provinces, psychologists need a doctoral degree (Psy.D. or Ph.D.) to practice. However, in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland & Labrador, a master's degree (M.A., M.Sc., or M.Ed.) is sufficient unless they wish to open their own practice.

    • Verify the credentials of your psychologist to ensure they meet the requirements of your province.

  • Registered Social Workers (RSWs)

    • Social workers providing therapy must have specific training and RSW Credentials in the therapies they deliver.

  • Psychiatrists

    • Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in mental health, capable of prescribing medication and providing therapy.

  • Counsellors/Psychotherapists

    • This category includes counselling therapists, behavioural therapists, psychotherapists, mental health therapists, clinical counsellors, and family counsellors, etc.

Steps to Claim Reimbursement

1. Verify Eligibility

  • Ensure that the services you receive are from eligible practitioners listed above. Confirm that your specific plan covers these services.

2. Collect Documentation

  • Obtain detailed receipts and invoices from your provider. These documents should include:

    • The practitioner’s name and credentials

    • The type of service provided

    • The date of service

    • The amount charged and proof of payment

    • The patient name

3. Submit Your Claim

You can submit a claim for reimbursement by:

  1. Logging in to your HSA account online at myhsaaccess.com

  2. Navigate to the "Make a claim" section.

  3. Upload your receipts and fill out the required information about the service.

  4. Submit your claim and wait for processing. It only takes 1-3 days, and reimbursement will hit your account the following Wednesday or Friday after approval (whichever comes first)
