During a Sequential Putaway session, the system guides you through a pre-ordered queue of suggested locations. When the suggested location for an LP is unavailable, inaccessible, or not suitable, you have three options: Skip, Suggest Another, or Bypass.
This article explains what each action does and when to use it. None of these actions recalculate the full session queue. The rest of the queue is always preserved exactly as it was.
Skip
What it does
Skip defers the current LP to the end of the queue. The session immediately advances to the next LP in sequence. When all other LPs have been placed, the skipped LP appears again at the end.
When to use it
The suggested location is physically blocked or inaccessible right now
You want to continue placing other LPs and return to this one later
What happens when the skipped LP comes back around
When the session reaches the skipped LP at the end of the queue, the initial suggestion will be still visible & applicable. Suggest another or bypass options may be used if the suggested location is still unavailable.
How to use it
On the LP Putaway screen, tap Skip LP for now. The session advances to the next LP automatically. A note on screen confirms the LP has been deferred.
Suggest Another
What it does
Suggest Another re-runs the suggestion engine for the current LP only and returns the next best available location based on the putaway algorithm setup. The rest of the queue is not affected.
When to use it
The suggested location is full, damaged, or unsuitable and you need an alternative
The skipped LP has come back around and still has no valid suggestion
Forward vs backward location
When a new location is found, the system checks whether it is ahead of or behind your current position on the walking path.
If the new location is ahead on the path — the new suggestion is shown immediately. No prompt is displayed. Scan the location to proceed.
If the new location is behind on the path — placing the LP now would mean backtracking. The system displays a prompt:
New location is outside of your route. Would you like to putaway this child LP right now or re-optimize your route to include this location in the sequence?
(A) Put away now — (B) Re-optimize route & putaway later
Choose (A) Put away now if you want to place the LP immediately at the new location, even if it means a short backtrack.
Choose (B) Re-optimize queue if you want to stay on your current walking path. The LP is re-inserted into the queue at the position that matches the new location's path order and will be served when you reach that point.
If no alternative location is found — the system displays the existing No suggestion available message. At this point, use Bypass to place the LP at a location of your choice or click suggest another to view your initial suggestions.
How to use it
On the Active Putaway screen, tap Suggest Another next to the current suggested location. The system returns a new suggestion or the no-suggestion message within a few seconds.
Bypass
What it does
Bypass lets you place an LP at a location other than the one suggested by the system. You simply scan a different location barcode instead of the suggested one.
When to use it
No suggestion is available and you know where the LP should go
The suggested location and all alternatives are unavailable and you need to place the LP regardless
How to use it
On the Active Putaway screen, scan any valid location barcode instead of the suggested one. What happens next depends on your warehouse putaway algorithm's Enforce suggested locations setting:
Forced Putaway setting | Outcome |
Off | The system accepts the scanned location, records the inventory movement, releases the original suggestion, and advances the queue to the next LP. |
On | The system blocks the placement and displays an error. You must scan the suggested location or use Suggest Another to get a different suggestion before you can proceed. |
What does not happen on bypass
The rest of the queue is not recalculated. Other LPs retain their current suggestions.
The bypassed LP's original suggested location is released and becomes available for other sessions.
Comparison at a Glance
Action | What it does | Queue effect | When to use |
Skip | Defers LP to end of queue | LP reappears at the end | Location or child LP temporarily blocked — come back later |
Suggest Another | Gets a new location for this LP only | Only this LP's suggestion changes | Location permanently unavailable — need an alternative |
Bypass | Places LP at a manually scanned location | Only this LP's suggestion is released | No suggestion available — you know where the LP goes |
Common Questions
Does any of these actions restart the whole session?
No. Skip, Suggest Another, and Bypass all affect only the current LP. The rest of the queue is unchanged.
Can I use Suggest Another more than once on the same LP?
Yes. Each tap runs a fresh suggestion against available locations at that moment. If multiple alternatives exist, each tap may return a different result. The new suggestions will be provided until no further suggestion is available. At that moment, clicking suggest another once again will revert you back to the initially suggested locations.
What if I skip an LP and then the session expires before I get back to it?
If the session times out (60 minutes of inactivity), any unplaced LPs — including skipped ones — are released from the session. LPs already placed before the timeout are preserved as inventory movements. See Resuming or Abandoning a Sequential Putaway Session for details on session expiry.
Does Bypass change how the suggestion algorithm works going forward?
No. The bypassed LP's original location is released, and the remaining LPs in the queue keep their suggestions. The algorithm is not re-run for any other LP.
