Override Serial Number Scanning on Packing (Shipment Order Type)

How to configure a Shipment Order Type to skip serial number scanning at the packing station and import serial numbers via Excel before shipping.

Overview

By default, serial number scanning at the packing station is controlled at the product level — if a product has serial tracking enabled, packers must scan each serial number during packing. This works well for most flows, but for order types like B2B bulk shipments or high-volume outbound where serial numbers are tracked centrally, requiring per-unit scanning at the packing station adds unnecessary friction.

The Override Serial Number Scanning on Packing parameter lets warehouse admins configure an entire Shipment Order Type to automatically skip serial scanning at packing — without changing any individual product settings. After packing, operators can import the serial numbers via Excel from the Shipment Order screen before shipping.

When to Use It

Enable this parameter on a Shipment Order Type when:

  • All orders of that type should skip serial scanning at the packing station, regardless of how individual products are configured.

  • Serial numbers for those orders are recorded centrally (e.g., imported via Excel) rather than scanned unit-by-unit at packing.

  • You want to differentiate serial scan behavior by order type without modifying product-level settings.

Prerequisites

Before enabling this parameter, ensure:

  • Your user account has access to Data Setup → Shipment Order Type.

  • The relevant Shipment Order Type exists or needs to be created.

  • Products on those orders have serial number tracking enabled. If an order contains no serial-tracked products, this parameter has no effect.

Configuration

  1. Navigate to Data Setup → Shipment Order Type.

  2. Open an existing SO type or click Create New.

  3. In the sidebar, find the Override Serial Number Scanning on Packing toggle.

    • The toggle appears after the Allow Production Date Swap On Picking toggle in the parameter list.

    • Hover over the ℹ️ icon for inline help: "When enabled, serial number scanning is skipped at the packing station for all orders of this type, regardless of the product-level serial tracking configuration. Users will be required to import serial numbers via Excel before shipping the order."

  4. Enable the toggle.

  5. Click Save.

💡 The default value is off (disabled). All existing SO types are unaffected until the toggle is explicitly enabled.

How It Works at the Packing Station

When an order whose SO type has Override Serial Number Scanning on Packing enabled reaches the packing station:

  • The packing station skips the serial number scan step for all serial-tracked products on the order, regardless of their product-level serial tracking configuration.

  • Non-serial-tracked products on the same order are not affected.

  • Packing proceeds normally in every other respect.

Importing Serial Numbers After Packing

Because serial scanning was skipped at packing, serial numbers must be recorded before the order is shipped. Logiwa IO unlocks the Import Serial Numbers action on the Shipment Order screen for these orders.

  1. Navigate to Shipment Orders.

  2. Find the packed order.

  3. Click Import Serial Numbers.

  4. Upload your Excel file containing the serial number data.

  5. Confirm the import. Serial numbers are recorded and the order is ready to ship.

⚠️ Serial numbers must be imported before shipping. The system will not allow shipment of serial-tracked products with no serial numbers recorded.

Common Questions

Does enabling this toggle affect orders already in progress?
The toggle applies at packing time. Orders that have already been packed are not retroactively affected. Changes take effect for the next order of that type to reach the packing station.

What if an order has a mix of serial-tracked and non-serial-tracked products?
The override applies only to serial-tracked products. Non-serial-tracked products are unaffected and pack normally.

Can I still scan serial numbers manually at packing if the override is on?
No. When the SO type override is enabled, the packing station skips the serial scan step entirely for that order. Serial numbers must be recorded via the Excel import on the Shipment Order screen instead.

Does this affect the product's serial tracking configuration?
No. The product-level serial tracking settings are unchanged. The SO type parameter is an order-level override that takes precedence at packing time only.

What happens if I enable the toggle but forget to import serial numbers before shipping?
The system will block the shipment. Serial numbers must be recorded via Excel import before a serial-tracked order can be shipped.
