To identify the cause of a shipment order allocation failure, please follow the steps below to check various screens and settings within the system that may have caused this occurrence.
Step 1: Check the Shipment Order Line Details
First, navigate to the Shipment Order screen.
Check the Shipment Order Line Details under the Products tab.
Review the following columns:
Inventory Location
Inventory LPN
Damage Reason
Lot Number
Expiry Date.
If any of these fields are filled, the system looks for a free inventory line containing the specified attribute for the product. If no such inventory exists, the order will result in a shortage.
Step 2: Check the Inventory by Location Screen
Search for the SKUs included in the shipment order.
Verify that there are inventory lines with the inventory status Stock.
If there are no inventory lines in the Stock status, it means either that there is no inventory or the existing inventory is allocated to other shipment orders.
If there are Stock inventory lines for this SKU, ensure that the location is not locked and/or that Prevent Allocation is not enabled for the location.
This can be confirmed on the Location screen.
Step 3: Check the Wave Exceptions Screen
Filter results by the Shipment Order Code.
If Shortage is written on the Explanation column, it does not necessarily mean that there is 0 stock for this product in this warehouse. Instead, it means that the system was not able to find free inventory based on the Allocation Algorithm that has been used and its inventory conditions.
Check the Wave Exceptions report for more information.
Check the Allocation Algorithm and Allocation Algorithm Rule Name.
Additional columns to check:
Inventory Quantity: Quantity found in the inventory line(s) based on the Allocation Algorithm.
Order Detail Quantity: Quantity in the Shipment Order Line for this SKU.
Shortage Quantity: Quantity that cannot be found based on the Allocation Algorithm.
Other possible explanations might include:
Eliminated by Job Type 'Advanced' Condition(s): Conditions in the Job Type setup disqualified this shipment order from allocation (e.g., entered Client condition does not contain the shipment order's Client).
Eliminated by 'Min N of Orders' Condition(s): A minimum order limit on the Batch Size prevented allocation due to insufficient Open/Shortage shipment orders.
Eliminated by 'Single Item' Condition(s): The Job Type is for Single Item orders, but the shipment order contains multiple items.
For more investigation, check the Job Type, Wave Rule, and Allocation Algorithm screens.
Note: Due to changes on the Wave Exceptions screen, all historical data will be removed on July 2024. Going forward, this screen will only display logs from the past 30 days.
Step 4: Check the Wave Rules Screen
Navigate to the Wave Rules screen and find the wave rule that has been run.
Check the selected job types and their run sequence (if more info is need about the job types, visit the Job Types screen as well).
Check if there are any specific filters that eliminate the shipment order from being allocated.
Step 5: Check the Allocation Algorithm
Based on the allocation algorithm selected in the job type(s) run by the wave rule, investigate the following:
Order Conditions: Only the Open and Shortage Shipment Orders that meet these conditions can be allocated by this algorithm/rule.
Inventory Conditions: For the shipment orders filtered by order conditions, the system will filter inventory results based on these conditions.
Even if there is Stock inventory in the Inventory by Location screen, the shipment order cannot be allocated if the inventory line does not meet the inventory conditions.
Step 6: Check the Job Type
As mentioned above in the Wave Exceptions section, there are a few things to check for allocation issues in the Job Type setup as well:
Identical Item Orders, Single Item Orders, Multi-Item Orders, and All Orders parameters are important for allocation.
If Identical Item Orders is selected, all shipment orders in the job need to contain the same SKU.
If Single Item Orders is selected, all shipment orders in the job need to contain only 1 quantity.
Batch Size is also crucial for allocation.
For example, if the Minimum Number of Orders is 10 and there are only 5 orders qualifying for this job type, none of the 5 orders will be allocated.
Check if there are any specific conditions that eliminate the shipment order from being allocated.
Verify if a Group By method is selected in the Job Type setup, as it can restrict options during the allocation process.
