Overview
A grazing event records a mob grazing one or more paddocks on a particular date.
Record the pre-graze and post-graze cover and the area grazed, and Trev calculates the pasture consumed. If you select a mob, Trev also shows the pasture consumed per animal.
In the Trev app, grazing events are recorded from the same form used to add a pasture walk. You can also record grazing events on the web.
Before you start
Most user types (Full Access, Authorised, Editor, Reporter) can log grazing events. Reporters can only do it within the current reporting period, before the report's submitted. The other three can also log past events, outside that window.
If the farm doesn’t appear in the Farm list, ask someone with Full Access or Authorised access to check your farm access.
The farm needs paddocks set up on its map. Without paddocks, the form only offers Basic mode.
If you want to link the event to a mob, there needs to be a weekly report covering that date with the mob recorded in it. You can still save a grazing event without selecting a mob.
Open the form
Tap the + button in the bottom menu.
Tap Pasture Walk Event.
Choose the farm from the Farm dropdown.
Choose the date. Grazing events can’t be dated in the future.
Choose Grazing Event from the Pasture walk mode dropdown:
Choose the time and mob
Under Time of day, tap All Day, AM or PM. All Day is selected by default.
Choose the mob from the Mob dropdown, if you want to link the event to a mob. Each mob shows its head count in brackets.
Important: A mob can only have one grazing event in each half of the day. An All Day event uses both AM and PM, so you can’t also add an AM or PM grazing event for the same mob on that date.
Enter the paddock details
Each paddock the mob grazed gets its own card.
Choose the paddock from the Paddock dropdown.
Check the Pre-graze cover. Trev pre-fills this from the paddock’s latest known cover and shows the source underneath, for example From farm walk, 3 Sep. Update it if you have a more recent reading.
Enter the Post-graze cover. Trev defaults this to 1500 kgDM/ha, so update it to the actual post-graze cover if needed.
Enter the Area grazed. It starts at 100%. To enter the area in hectares instead, tap the unit dropdown and choose ha.
If only part of the paddock was grazed and the mob was back fenced, turn Backfenced on.
To add another paddock, tap + Add paddock below the card and repeat these steps.
To remove a paddock, tap the bin icon in the top right of its card.
Check the pasture consumed
Once a paddock card has both covers and an area, the Pasture consumed summary appears below the cards. It shows Available feed in kgDM, Area grazed in hectares and, if you selected a mob, Mob size and Per animal.
If the event includes two or more paddocks, each paddock card also shows its own Consumed figure. The figures update as you enter information, so you can use them as a sense-check before saving. The area grazed should reflect the area the mob actually grazed.
Save the event
Enter Stand-off hours if the mob was stood off pasture that day, up to 24 hours. This is optional.
Add any Notes, if needed.
Tap Save.
What to expect
Trev shows a Grazing event created message and takes you back to where you started. The event is saved on your phone straight away and is sent to Trev on the web when the app syncs.
The post-graze cover you record becomes that paddock’s latest known cover until a newer cover is recorded. Trev can then offer that figure as the pre-graze cover the next time you record a grazing event for the paddock.
Grazing events can’t currently be viewed or edited in the Trev app after they have been saved. To review or change a grazing event, use Trev on the web.
Troubleshooting
Why can’t I choose Grazing Event under Pasture walk mode?
The farm needs paddocks set up on its map before Grazing Event is available. Paddocks can be created and managed in Trev on the web by Full Access or Authorised users.
Why can’t I select a mob?
There isn’t a weekly report with mobs covering the date you selected. The dropdown may show No mobs recorded for this date or No reporting season for this date.
If the date is correct, make sure the relevant weekly report and mob are set up. Otherwise, you can save the grazing event without selecting a mob.
Why can’t I see the grazing event on the web?
The event needs to sync from the app before it appears on the web. If you recorded it while offline, reconnect and sync the app. If it still doesn’t appear after syncing, get in touch with the Trev team through the chat in Trev.
Why won’t the event save?
Check the validation message shown under the relevant field. Common things to check are:
the post-graze cover is not higher than the pre-graze cover;
the area grazed is not larger than the paddock; and
the mob does not already have a grazing event using that part of the day.
