How do I set up a recurring donation on behalf of a new donor?
Updated over a month ago

DISCLAIMER: This article will help guide you through completing this process - however, we do not recommend setting up recurring donations on your donor's behalf.

We understand there may be extenuating circumstances that require you to do this for a handful of donors - but, as a best practice, you should encourage your donors to set up donations on their own for two major reasons:

  • they need to set up an account with credentials so they can access their donation history and receipts at their convenience

  • they should complete this process through the site so they can review and accept our Terms & Conditions (as well as give express permission for us to send donation receipts and other communications to their e-mail)

Step 1: Open an 'Incognito Window' or 'Private Browsing Session'

We highly recommend you complete this process in an 'Incognito Window' or 'Private Browsing Session'. This is to ensure the recurring donation is set up for the correct donor and that their information is not accidentally used for another donor's record in the future.

Step 2: Visit your donation page

Navigate to your organization's public-facing donation page.

Step 3: Set up the donor's recurring donation

Acting as the donor, select the donation amount and the frequency of scheduled payments.

Set up their donor profile using either an e-mail address they provided or a "throwaway" e-mail you created that can be used to receive their donation receipts.

For more information on setting up a "throwaway" e-mail, check out this article.

Once this is all set, you can follow the standard donation flow as outlined here.

Step 4: Close out the 'Incognito Window' or 'Private Browsing Session'

We highly recommend closing your session each time you set up a different recurring donation or process a payment on the donor's behalf. This ensures no information is incorrectly auto-filled the next time you need to complete this process.
