All merchants that accept cards have a merchant category code (MCC) — this is how the card network recognises what type of merchant they are. Certain categories aren't supported on nsave cards for regulatory, compliance and fraud-prevention reasons. These restrictions apply to every nsave card, decline automatically before the payment even reaches nsave, and can't be lifted for individual accounts.
Here are the ones you're most likely to come across.
Merchant types that aren't supported
💸 Money transfer services and wallet top-ups — you can't use the card to fund a transfer or remittance service, or load an e-wallet or another prepaid card. To send money abroad, use nsave's own transfer features in the app instead.
💵 ATM and cash withdrawals — cash withdrawals and cash-like purchases (money orders, foreign currency, casino chips) are not currently available with the card.
🏛️ Embassies and consulates — including visa and passport fees, which we know matters to many of our customers. Check whether the embassy accepts bank transfer or cash instead.
🎰 Gambling and betting — casinos, betting sites, lotteries and racing of every kind, including government-licensed operators.
📈 Brokers, trading platforms and crypto — you can't fund a brokerage, trading or crypto account with the card.
🤲 Donations to religious organisations, political organisations and labour unions — these will decline even when the cause is entirely legitimate.
💊 Pharmacies and drug stores, as coded by the card network.
🚫 A small number of other categories — including weapons, adult services, debt collection, bail payments, pawn shops, and direct marketing / telemarketing merchants.
"But my merchant isn't any of these"
If a payment to an ordinary-looking merchant is declined, there are three likely explanations:
The merchant has an unexpected category code. The MCC is assigned by the merchant's own payment processor, and it isn't always intuitive. A shop that also handles remittances or sells top-up vouchers may be coded as a money transfer business — so buying something unrelated there is still declined. An ordinary online retailer can be coded as "direct marketing". And the same brand can behave differently in different places: two branches, or a website versus an app, can carry different codes.
The merchant is temporarily blocked. Individual merchants are sometimes blocked because of signs of fraud, unusually high dispute or refund rates, or a compromise on their side. These blocks change continuously and are often lifted once the risk passes — so a payment that worked last month can be declined today, and work again later.
The merchant itself is rejecting the payment. Some merchants and their payment providers independently refuse certain card types, such as virtual or prepaid cards, and that decision sits entirely on their side. If the decline doesn't appear in your nsave transaction history at all, this is usually why.
A category block usually shows as an immediate decline that repeats every time at that one merchant, while your card works normally everywhere else. For balance, freeze and other causes, see Why was my card payment declined?
What can I do instead?
Use your nsave account details rather than the card — ACH, SWIFT/wire, or Faster Payments, depending on currency. Find these under Account Details on your home screen.
Send money through nsave directly instead of funding a third-party transfer service with your card.
Use a different payment method at that specific merchant.
What your card is great for
Online shopping and everyday retail
Subscriptions and recurring payments
Travel bookings, hotels, airlines and transport
Restaurants, groceries and in-store contactless
Why these restrictions exist
They come from the rules our card programme operates under — card network rules, regulatory requirements, and fraud prevention. You'll find the same kinds of restrictions on cards from most digital banking providers. Because they're set at the programme level, we can't unblock a category or merchant for an individual customer, and neither can our support team.
FAQs
Can you tell me if a merchant will work before I try?
Not reliably. We can't see a merchant's category code until a transaction is attempted, the same brand can be coded differently in different places, and merchant-level blocks change frequently.
Was money taken from my balance?
No. A declined transaction is never settled. If you briefly saw the amount held, it's released automatically.
Will retrying help?
Not for a blocked category. For a temporarily blocked merchant it may work later — but repeated attempts can trigger fraud monitoring, so leave it a while rather than retrying immediately.
I think a merchant is blocked by mistake.
Let us know. We can raise it for review, though we can't guarantee it'll be unblocked or say how long a review takes.
Can support unblock a category or merchant for me?
No. Restrictions apply to the whole card programme and can't be changed per account.
Can I withdraw cash with the card?
Not currently. If this changes, we'll announce it in the app.
Is my card or account in trouble?
No. A category decline is a routine rule being applied. It doesn't affect your card, your standing, or the rest of your nsave account.
Still stuck? Contact us via in-app chat or support@nsave.com with the merchant name, the amount, and the date and time of the attempt, and we'll confirm the reason for the decline.
