Introduction:

Welcome to the Operation 36 training article on choosing dates and pricing. If you are new to setting up a program, this article will give you tips and tricks to setting up a good program structure so you can start small and scale.

Operation 36 Program Principles

  • Creating Golfers Take Years - It is proven that golfers need consistent classes and play days to become skilled golfers

  • Automate Goals for Golfers - Op 36 is a long-term program that challenges golfers appropriately for multiple years (until they can shoot par 36 from the full tee-box)

  • Run All Season Long- The program and curriculum are designed to be run all season long which is good for golfers, golf professionals, and golf facilities

  • Easy Administration- The curriculum is designed to allow for each student to have their own tracked level, but participate in classes together to make administration easy as a coach

  • Clear Progress Tracking- Golfers can jump in and out of the program over the course of years, but will always pick up right where they left off. This is tracked easily in the technology.

The 8 Week Standard Program Pilot

(8) Classes + (4) 9 Hole Events

To get started we highly recommend you begin with an 8 Week Pilot Program and limit it to opening 2 Classes.

For that program students who enroll will attend:

  • (8) weekly classes

  • (4) 9 hole events.

  • 12 Sessions Total over 8 weeks

Why start with this structure?

  • It allows you to get familiar with the program as a coach

  • 8 Weeks is a manageable commitment for families

  • 8 Weeks is a manageable price for participants to pay

  • 8 Weeks is enough time for your students to see themselves getting better

  • There are 7 Technical Skills in the Operation 36 Curriculum. 8 Weeks allows you to cover one skill a week and to do a recap week.

  • Running (4) 9 hole events for participants will allow golfers to really see milestone progression

  • You can then easily continue the program by offering another 8 weeks right after your pilot for these participants, while opening up more programs when you are ready to do so

Here is a video of Operation 36 Co-founder Matt Reagan showing how a program can scale from 2 classes to a $100K program.

Scheduling Tips for Your Class Schedule

  • Each class should have a specific day and time (ex: Monday 4-5 PM).

  • Students that enroll will come to that same class for the entire semester (ex: 8 weeks)

  • We recommend a 6:1 student to coach ratio for kids (based on experience level with groups feel free to do more or less)

  • Do back to back classes (4:00-5:00 / 5:00 - 6:00) to save yourself time

  • Start with opening just two classes, then open more slowly as they fill

  • Start a waitlist - Plan ahead on what days/times you can add a class, and then encourage families to help you recruit to open another class

Scheduling Tips for Your 9 Hole Events

  • Your 9 hole events should be on separate days from classes

  • All participants from classes should attend the same 9 hole event

  • Work with your club to find the slowest times at your club (we see evenings work well)

  • Don't worry about Pace of Play - Your Level 1 Golfers will get around the course in under 2 hours since they are starting so close to hole

    • We start golfers close so they can see success quickly and to take away pace of play challenges

Pricing Your Program

  • The easiest way to price a program is to think per session, but package into one price

  • Standard 8 Week Program = $360 (RECOMMENDED)

    • 8 Classes - $30/class = $240

    • (4) 9 Hole Events - $30/Event = $120

  • This pricing is competitive and offers great value compared to private lessons.

  • If you are in a cost sensitive market, you can lower rate to $25 or we have seen up to $40 for higher priced markets

  • If you have to pay greens fees for the program, just add a premium on top of the fee when pricing to cover your coaching cost of running the 9 hole event. You and the course should benefit from these. Just remember the alternative is your players go book a time on their own, and there is immense value in your organizing these for them as beginners won't play unless you put it on their calendar. Here is an example:

    • The course charges you $30 for a tee time. You will Charge $45 for the 9 Hole Events so you make $15 per player that plays.

      • 8 Classes - $30/class = $240

      • (4) 9 Hole Events - $45/Event = $180

      • Program Tuition $420 (8 Week Program)

Do not underprice yourself. There is immense value you are providing a true golf program with playing and education that you guarantee their golfers are going to get better and you can prove it with the technology. We understand that most clubs run drop in clinics at $15-$20 and there are some existing golfers who ask for that. Keep running those programs separately, but this is not a drop in. It is a committed developmental program and it works.
