🏷️ How to use Tags

All fans who interact with your campaigns are tagged to help segment your audiences. Learn how to use them and format them correctly here

The platform is based on a handy tagging system to help you understand when and where your fans signed up and what they have engaged with. Fans are assigned tags when interacting with your campaigns and you can use these tags to segment and talk to your audiences accordingly.

Fans can be tagged with:

  • Landing Page config tags - in the config settings of any landing page, you can set the tag that will be assigned to fans who fill in the form e.g. "pre-sale-sign-up"

  • Answer tags - Poll answers should have relevant answer tags so you know which fans picked which answer - make these as specific as possible as all tags MUST be unique. (Using "Yes" or "No" on one poll, and again on the next, means all those answers will merge together making it extremely hard to then segment your audience effectively).

  • Import tags - Setting a clear and accurate import tag means you can easily find these fans when importing a previous mailing list or any historical sales data.

  • Merch tags - such as "Shopify-welcome"/"merch-welcome", given to any fan who's made a purchase and their fan record has been populated with that transactional data.

  • Manual tags - given to any segment of your audience that's been manually filtered. e.g. "merch-comp-winners-10" - useful for picking competition winners, fans that have RSVP'd to an event, or any custom audiences.

Common Tags

Anytime a fan signs up they will gain a "welcome" tag. If a fan texts or calls you for example they will be tagged with either "sms-welcome" OR "voice-welcome".

Any Landing Page tag will have the prefix "signup" followed by the name of your landing page (and you can customise this in the config settings for that page).

Tag Formatting

To avoid any issues with tagging fans incorrectly, or multiple tags being created for the same outcome, it's worth taking extra care when choosing and formatting your tags.

For example: Fans choosing to know more about your upcoming London show in a Landing Page poll -

"sign-up-london" & "sign-up-London" - this would create 2 tags because "L" is both upper case and lower case. If you then imported London signups from an external list and tagged them using different formatting, these tags would then be separate rather than together. In this case, you can use tag manager to merge two tags together.

Another example - Asking fans to RSVP to an event using a Landing Page poll -

"RSVP-yes" - if this tag has been used on a previous Landing Page poll, then fan answers from BOTH pages will merge under ONE tag. To avoid this, make sure to use more specific tags such as "RSVP-yes-listening-party" to avoid data getting mixed up.

Answer Tags

When using polls on Landing Pages, you can give each answer (multiple choice) it's own tag so that fans can be segmented per answer. The breakdown of answers is shown in the Landing Page stats tab as a graph and beneath it is a list of answers with number or fans for each.

It's also worth noting fans can be tagged after submitting an answer. This is particularly useful for free-text field (custom) answers to a question so you can see how many fans answered the question. You can then find them by filtering by tag in the fan uploads section under the Fans tab.

Tag Manager

Navigate to Engage then Tag Manager - here you can organise and edit tags. You can rename, reformat and delete unwanted tags. An important thing to note here is if you rename a tag to an existing one, this will create a merge - meaning all fans who were under both tags will now fall under just one with the common name. This can't be undone, so make sure you use this feature only when needed.
