🏷️ How to use Tags

Learn how tags are used to segment your fans and highlight their engagement

Openstage utilises a tagging system that:

  • Helps you understand when and where your fans signed up

  • Shows you what your fans are engaging with

  • Provides an overview of your fan history

Fans are assigned tags after interacting with your campaigns - these tags can then be used to segment and communicate with your fans more effectively.


What can fans be tagged with?

Openstage can assign a number of different tags to fans.

Many of these tags are generated by the platform, others can be customised to fit your needs!


System tags

Openstage has a number of system tags that are assigned to fans - these depend on the action the fan has taken.

Here is a breakdown of these tags and when they are assigned to fans:

  • welcome - fan signed up via one of your landing pages

  • fanpage - fan signed up via your Fanpage

  • sms-welcome - fan has texted your Openstage phone number

  • voice-welcome - fan has called your Openstage phone number

  • presave-welcome - fan presaved on Apple Music, Spotify or Deezer

  • ticketing-welcome - fan purchased tickets via an Openstage box office

Additionally, Openstage has system tags for merch integrations. These tags are derived from the merch integration plus ‘welcome’. For example:

shopify-welcome

These tags are assigned when a fan purchases an item from the connected store for the first time since the store was integrated or have been pulled through from a historical sync or transaction.


Landing page tags

All landing pages with an active Welcome step have a tag that is specific to the page.

This tag is either:

  • Generated by the system based on the name you’ve given to the landing page

  • A custom tag you’ve added in the Config tab of the landing page

These tags will always start with ‘signup’, for example:

signup-join-the-newsletter


Import tags

Import tags are any tags added to fans when importing fan data, or transactional data.

There are two ways fans can be assigned tags during an import:

  1. The import tag field on Openstage

  2. Any tags in the .csv file being imported

🙌 Top Tip: Use clear and accurate import tags for future reference.

Import tags don’t have any specific identifiers, such as the ‘signup’ prefix for landing page tags.

This means that your import tags should contain any information that will help with identifying where the fans came from, why they’re being tagged, who imported them and when the import was completed.

As an example:

mailing.list.import_CP_Nov.11.2025

This import tag clearly shows that the fans are imported fans from an existing mailing list, and that they were imported by someone with the initials CP on November 11th of 2025.


Manual tags

Similar to import tags, manual tags are chosen by you.

Manual tags are added to fans by either:

  • Applying a tag in the audience builder to a segment of fans that have been manually filtered

  • Exporting a segment of fans and re-importing them with the chosen tag using the import tag field on Openstage

Adding manual tags in this way can be useful for segmenting competition winners or fans that have RSVP’d to a particular event.


Tag formatting

Tags on Openstage are formatted in different ways depending on how the tag was assigned.


System tag formatting

System tags on Openstage follow certain formats to ensure you know where the tag came from and why it was assigned to a fan.

Fans completing actions for the first time will result in welcome in combination with a relevant prefix, such as:

voice-welcome

Any tags relevant to an integration will have the channel name as the prefix, followed by the interaction:

shopify-welcome or bandsintown-event

Custom tag formatting

Your custom tags can take any form, but great care should be taken when choosing and formatting your tags to avoid incorrectly tagging fans, or using multiple tags for the same purpose.

As an example, if you were going to tag fans signing up to learn more about an upcoming show in London on 11th November 2025, your tag should represent this information, something like:

signup-london-11-nov-2025

It’s worth bearing in mind that tags are case sensitive. This means that signup-london-11-nov-2025 and signup-London-11-nov-2025 are seen by our system as different tags.

If you would like to merge these tags after the fact, you can do so with our Tag Manager.


Poll answers

Poll answers on Openstage are NOT tags.

You can create audiences filtered by poll answers in the audience builder and a breakdown of answers for a given poll are shown on the performance tab of the relevant landing page.


Tag manager

Our tag manager is the place for viewing, organising and editing tags.

To find the tag manager, head to:

Engage > tag manager

Using the tag manager you can:

  • Rename tags

  • Reformat and delete unwanted tags

  • View all fans with a particular tag

🙌 Top Tip: Combine tags with name changes.

If you rename a tag to match the name of an existing tag, the fans in both tags will be merged - the existing tag will now have all fans in both original tags.

Please note: This cannot be undone. Please utlise this feature with care.
