In order to track your leads optimally, we recommend that you set up conversion tracking for Google Ads and Google Analytics (GA4) via Google Tag Manager (GTM).

Google Tag Manager (GTM) is a management tool that allows you to integrate tracking codes & other code snippets into your funnel easily and manage centrally and without any programming effort.

💡 Need help setting up your first Google Ad campaign? No problem. Follow our step-by-step guide here.

How do I set up conversion tracking for my funnel in Google Ads?

  1. Go to Google Ads (click here).

  2. Under “Target actions” navigate to “Conversions”

  3. Click on “Settings” and then:

    • Accept the “Customer Data Terms of Service.”

    • Enable “Enhanced Conversions for Leads” and select Google Tag Manager as the method.

    • Enable “Enhanced Conversions” and select Google Tag Manager as the method.

💡 Note: "Enhanced Conversions" and “Enhanced Conversions for Leads” refers to two different functions, even though their names are almost identical. Both must be enabled.

  4. Click on “Summary” and then “+ New Conversion Action.”

  5. Select “Website”, enter the domain of the funnel (this is only needed to proceed and is not actually relevant), and click “Scan.”

  6. If a screen titled “Add a Conversion Action” appears under “Create Conversion Actions from Website Events,” click “Cancel.”

  7. Scroll to the bottom and click “+ Manually Add Conversion Action” under “Manually Create Conversion Actions Using Code.”

  8. In “Optimization for Goals and Actions,” choose the category “Submit Lead Form.”

  9. Always use “Primary Action Used for Bid Optimization” for optimization options (in certain cases, you may need to switch the conversion from “Primary” to “Secondary”; this should be evaluated case by case, depending on the account setup).

  10. For the name, choose something like “Perspective Funnel Submit” or any other name that clearly identifies this conversion.

  11. For value, either enter an estimated value of what a lead is worth to you (e.g., €10) or select “Do not use a value for this conversion action (not recommended).”

  12. Change the counting method to “One.”

  13. You can usually leave the settings for the conversion tracking periods and attribution at their default values.

  14. Ensure that the checkbox for “Use enhanced conversions for this conversion action” is checked.

  15. Click “Done”

  16. Click “Save and Continue”

  17. On the next screen, choose “Use Google Tag Manager” and copy:

    a) the string displayed under the name of your conversion action in the “Conversion Labels” section (eg. licFCK_Vxc4ZEKnb544-)

    b) the "Conversion ID" (e.g. 16674057642)

❗️ We need this conversion label & conversion ID in the Google Tag Manager.

  18. Ideally leave this tab open for now (as we will need the ID & Conversion Label again in the next steps)

How do I create a container at GTM and link it to my funnel?

  1. Open a new tab, go to tagmanager.google.com and click on “Create Account”

  2. Enter an account name and select the country for the account.

  3. Enter a descriptive container name (e.g., the domain of your funnel) and choose “Web” as the container type.

  4. Click on “Create” and accept the terms of service.

  5. Your container will be automatically created, and an installation dialog should appear.

  6. Extract only the container ID from the code, which always starts with “GTM-” (Example: GTM-ABC123).

  7. Open your funnel and navigate to Integrations.

  8. Click on “Google Tag Manager” and enter your container ID.

💡 You can find more information on linking your Funnel with GTM here.

How do I install the tracking template in Google Tag Manager?

  1. Open your container in Google Tag Manager.

  2. Click on “Admin” in the top left.

  3. In the right section, click on “Import Container.”

  4. Select the appropriate container template (depending on whether you also want to use Google Analytics) and upload it:

  5. Choose “New” under “Choose Workspace.”

  6. Enter a title, such as “Perspective Funnel Template,” to know which changes have been made.

  7. If you are not currently using any tags in Google Tag Manager, select “Overwrite.”

💡 If you are already using tags, select “Merge” and carefully review the configuration (if you already have a configuration in Google Tag Manager, conflicts may occur with our template, and you should consult specialists).

  8. In the container, you will find various tags, triggers, and variables, and a few of them need to be adjusted:

Tag: Conversion Linker

  • Enter the main domain of your funnel.

  • Example: If your funnel runs under go.funnel.com/1234 , the domain would be go.funnel.com.

  • Remove **EDIT** from the tag name.

Variable: Google Ads (Conversion ID)

  • Add the Conversion ID (e.g. 16674057642) you received when setting up the conversion action in Google Ads (see step 17 here).

💡 I forgot to copy the ID. Where can I find it?

  • Find the Conversion ID in Google Ads:

  • Open Google Ads, go to Tools & Settings, and select Google Tag.

  • You will find an ID in the format “AW-100000000.”

  • Copy only the number following “AW-” and paste it.

  • Remove **EDIT** from the variable name.

Tag: Google Ads Conversion – Perspective Form Submitted

  • Enter the conversion label (eg. licFCK_Vxc4ZEKnb544-) you received when setting up the conversion action in Google Ads (see step 17 here).

  • Remove **EDIT** from the tag name.

Variable: GA4 ID (only necessary if you use the template with GA4)

  • You can find the GA4 ID in GA4:

    • Open Google Analytics, go to Data Streams, and click “Configure Tag Settings” under “Google Tag.”

    • Copy the ID (usually in the format: G-XXXXX) and paste it.

  • Remove **EDIT** from the variable name.

9. Click on “Next” and then “Confirm”

10. Click on “Submit” in the top right and then “Publish”

💡 You have set up tracking according to our instructions, but your conversions are not showing up in Google Ads/Google Analytics? No need to panic. In some cases, Google Tag Manager takes up to 48 hours for changes to be applied correctly and it can also take up to 24 hours for data to be displayed in Google Ads and Google Analytics.
