How to shrink overflow text in an Elements template to compensate for longer text strings
When designing Elements templates, it’s important to ensure that text fits well in content pieces without disrupting the overall look and feel of your document. One effective way to achieve this is by using the shrink feature for text fields. When activated, it detects if text will exceed the boundaries of the placeholder layer. If text overflow is detected, the font size is scaled down to ensure all text fits within the confines of the placeholder.
Setting up the template
When you’re ready to create your template in the Elements app, you’ll need to follow these steps to assign the shrink feature to your text fields:
Start by building your template in the Elements app. This is where you’ll design the layout and decide where all the text and image fields go. Ensure text placeholders are assigned the desired height and width, as this drives when the shrink feature is triggered.
Once your template is set up, take a moment to identify which text fields will benefit from the shrink feature. Consider the amount of information users will need to input into each field. For example, if a text field normally stores two lines of text, however there are occasions where a user may enter five lines of text, that may be a good candidate for activating this feature. This ensures the lengthier block of text remains within the boundaries you have identified.
Click on the text field you want to modify. Once selected, a formatting box will appear on the right side of the template designer.
In the formatting box, scroll to find the Limit Overflow section. This is where you can manage how the text behaves when it exceeds the space provided.
Within the Limit Overflow section, you’ll see a checkbox labeled SHRINK. Click this box to activate the shrink feature for that specific text field.
