Poppy MCP: Use Your Boards From Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code or Cursor

Connect Poppy to the AI tools you already use. They can read your boards and vaults, research creators and ads, ask your board chats, and build boards for you.

Poppy MCP lets other AI tools work inside your Poppy account. Once connected, Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code or Cursor can read your boards and vaults, search Poppy's content library, ask your board chats questions, and add or organize things on a board for you. You ask in your AI tool, it does the work in Poppy.

You need an active Poppy plan to use it. Claude and ChatGPT connect by signing in to Poppy. Claude Code and Cursor need an API key.

What you can ask it to do

  • Read your boards: list your boards, say what is on one, and read any item, group or chat's knowledge base

  • Ask your board chats: send a question to a chat on your board and get the answer with that chat's sources attached, for example "Ask the Copy chat on my Launch board for five subject lines"

  • Research: find breakout reels and carousels in Poppy's content library, creators to study, a creator's top posts, trending topics, and a brand's ads

  • Use your Vaults: search what you have saved, read an item's transcript, create a vault, save links and notes to it

  • Build boards: add links, notes, ads and search results to a board, create groups and chats, connect items to a chat, rename, label, tidy, or delete

Example asks:

  • "Find breakout fitness reels from the last 30 days and tell me what the hooks have in common."

  • "What's in the Top reels group on my Launch board? Sum up the hooks."

  • "Make a Hooks vault and save these three TikToks to it."

  • "On my Q4 board, make a group of Liquid Death's longest-running video ads and a chat connected to it."

Where to find the setup

  1. In Poppy, click your profile picture in the top right.

  2. Go to Developer, then Poppy AI MCP.

  3. Pick the tab for your tool: Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code or Cursor. Each tab has the steps and a button that does most of the work.

Connect Claude (claude.ai)

  1. On the Claude tab, click Connect to Claude. Claude opens with Poppy's name and URL already filled in.

  2. Click Add, sign in to Poppy and approve.

That's it. Poppy now shows in Claude's connectors, and you can ask Claude about your boards in any chat.

You can disconnect any time from Claude's connector settings.

Connect ChatGPT

  1. On the ChatGPT tab, click Open ChatGPT connectors. This opens ChatGPT's connector settings in developer mode.

  2. Paste the Poppy URL shown in the dialog as the server URL.

  3. Sign in to Poppy and approve.

You can disconnect any time from ChatGPT's connector settings.

Connect Claude Code or Cursor

These two are developer tools and need a Poppy API key instead of a sign-in.

  1. Go to Settings → API keys and create a key with the MCP scope ticked. A key made before the MCP scope existed will not work, so create a new one or edit the old key to add the scope.

  2. Claude Code: on the Claude Code tab click Copy command, replace YOUR_KEY with your key, and run it in your terminal.

  3. Cursor: on the Cursor tab click Add to Cursor, accept the install, then put your key in place of YOUR_KEY in mcp.json.

Keep your key inside your tool, never in a shared file. Anyone with the key can act as you in Poppy. If the API keys page says API keys are still being enabled for your account, message us in the chat and we will sort it out.

How changes land on your board

  • If you have the board open in Poppy, the change appears in front of you and is one undo step: press Cmd + Z to take it back. A small badge in the top right says who did it, for example "Claude · Added 2 items".

  • If the board is closed, the change is saved and you will see it the next time you open the board. The board moves to the top of your boards list.

  • Links added this way are read in the background, so their transcript and text arrive a minute or so later.

  • Deleting happens right away with no confirmation when it comes from Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor. Only ask for a delete you are sure about. If the board was open, Cmd + Z brings it back; otherwise use Version Control.

What it can and cannot see

  • Your own boards and vaults, and the team boards and vaults of teams you belong to.

  • A private board or private vault is only available to its owner.

  • A team API key only reaches that team's boards and vaults.

  • Other people's public boards are not available over MCP.

Credits and limits

  • Only one thing spends credits: asking a board chat a question. It costs the same as sending that message in Poppy, from your personal pool or the team's pool for a team board. See Understanding Credits.

  • Reading boards, searching the library, using vaults and editing boards cost no credits.

  • The AI tool you connected (Claude, ChatGPT) charges you on its own plan for the conversation itself. Poppy has nothing to do with that part.

  • Fair-use limits per person: live search on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and LinkedIn is 10 a minute and 100 a day; board edits are 30 a minute and 1,000 a day; adding items is 100 a minute and 500 a day.

Common errors

"Poppy over MCP needs an active Poppy plan."
Your subscription is not active, or you signed in with a different email than the one on your plan. Check your billing and reconnect with the right account. After renewing it can take up to 10 minutes to be recognized.

"Out of Poppy credits. Add credits in the Poppy app, then try again."
You asked a board chat and your credits are used up. Top up in Poppy or wait for the reset on the 1st.

"Rate limit reached. Try again in a minute." or "… limit reached (100 per day). Try again tomorrow."
You hit one of the fair-use limits above.

Claude or ChatGPT says Poppy needs to be reconnected, or the tools are missing.
Open the connector settings in that tool, remove Poppy, and connect again from the Poppy AI MCP dialog. For Claude Code or Cursor, check the key is still active on the API keys page and has the MCP scope.

The AI says it cannot find or open a board.
Say the board's name exactly as it appears in Poppy, or ask it to list your boards first. Private boards owned by a teammate are not available.

Common questions

Q: Is this the same as Copilot?
A: Same tools, different place. Copilot is the sparkle button inside a Poppy board. MCP puts those tools inside Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code or Cursor, so you can work on Poppy without opening it. See Poppy Copilot.

Q: Do I need the Power User plan or API access?
A: Any active Poppy plan can connect Claude or ChatGPT by signing in. Claude Code and Cursor need an API key, and making a key needs a plan with API access.

Q: Can my whole team use it?
A: Yes. Each person connects their own account and sees the team boards they belong to.

Q: Is my content safe?
A: The connection acts as you and only reaches what you can already open in Poppy. Nothing is shared with other Poppy users. You can disconnect from your AI tool's settings or delete the API key at any time.

Q: Which other tools work?
A: Any tool that supports MCP over HTTP can connect with the same URL and an API key. The four in the dialog are the ones we test.

Q: Why does Claude show a globe instead of the Poppy logo?
A: Claude shows a generic icon for custom connectors. It is still Poppy.

Quick tips

  • Name the board. "On my Launch board, …" saves the AI a lookup.

  • Ask for the whole job at once. "A group of X, a group of Y, and a chat connected to both" lands in one go.

  • Keep the board open while an AI edits it if you want to watch it happen and have Cmd + Z handy.

  • Say "ask me before deleting" in your first message if you want a check every time.
