Updated over 4 months ago

Learning Outcomes

  • You will learn where to find maps on the platform

  • You will understand what insights maps on the platform can provide

What maps are available on TRAC?

There are 3 types of maps found on the platform, each with its own unique way of presenting data.

  1. Country Breakdown Map

  2. City Breakdown Map

  3. Geo-coordinates map

There are a couple of places on the platform where you'll find maps:

What Insights Can You Gain?

  1. Country Breakdown: Highlights countries on the map based on the location of authors from your dataset. The colours are determined by the general sentiment of the localized content.

    • Green = Positive

    • Red = Negative

    • Grey = Neutral

N.B. Content from the United States is broken down further in this view to show the sentiment of content from each individual state

  1. City Breakdown: Provides a more in-depth view of your data, allowing you to view the cities where authors are located and the sentiment for any given city

    • Green = Positive

    • Red = Negative

    • Grey = Neutral

  1. Geo-Coordinates: Gives you a view of all the hotspots where your topics are being talked about most. You can even zoom down to street level in this view!

You also have the option to display the data from the Country and City Breakdown maps in a table view

How does Pulsar Analyse Locations?

  • X: For X we use bio location keyword filtering, using words designed to match countries based on their major cities, country codes, and full country names. The result may not be accurate in all cases due to factors such as multiple places with similar names or ambiguous names. If location is not provided in a userโ€™s profile location field, X will not attempt to make a classification and as such it's expected behavior that some tweets may not be pulled into a search. We also look for geo-tagged tweets, where at the time of posting the user has tagged the tweet with a place or location that matches the specific country.

  • News, Blogs, Forums, Youtube, and Tumblr: we filter for location using the country_code of the domain or the author location (if available).

  • Reviews: the country filter is based on the source (e.g. all reviews from Amazon.com will automatically be associated with the country USA).

  • Instagram: there is no location information available. Following the changes to Instagram, this information is no longer available as such Instagram data will always have "unknown" location.

  • Facebook: the data we collect in a Topic search or Panel Search is from Facebook Pages, not Facebook users. If we have the page's specific country then we apply this as the location of the post.
