Once you've found a narrative of interest, you can explore it further in the Detailed Narrative view. In this article, we'll delve into the features and functionality of the detailed narrative view that will help you explore and comprehend narratives in depth.
Accessing the Detailed Narrative View
From the Narratives Search Results page, click into any of the Narratives listed in the table of Narratives.
This will take you to a new page that breaks down that specific Narrative in more detail, as shown below.
But before we delve into a single narrative, let's first explain what a narrative is.
What is a Narrative?
In the context of Narratives AI, narratives refer to clusters of statistically similar or related news or social content, which revolve around specific topics, events, themes, or people, over a period of time. Narratives can be long-running like "Gun control", perennial like “Stock market booms and crashes”, or short-lived like “Elections 2024”.
What Features are in the Detailed Narrative View?
The detailed narrative page helps you understand a narrative in depth and highlights the information:
Narrative Summary: A concise description that perfectly encapsulates what the narrative is about, drawn from potentially thousands of pieces of content that formed the narrative.
The source of data: A tag that identifies whether this is a Media Narrative, or Public Narrative.
Macro versus Micro: A tag that identifies whether this is Macro or Micro Narrative. Learn more about this here.
Narrative Interest: A visual representation of the narrative’s trajectory overtime. This chart shows how the narrative has unfolded, including spikes, toughs, and turning points.
Narrative Evolution chart: A visual presentation of the narrative in the context of similar conversations and related topics. The chart reveals how the narrative formed, where it is going and where it merged or split into multiple sub-narratives, over time.
Top Content: A selection of sample content associated with the narrative, including social media posts or news articles that provide context, and inspiration for content that can drive a narrative.
What does the Narrative Interest Chart tell me?
The Narrative Interest chart is a visual representation of the narrative’s trajectory over time, providing an overview of how it has unfolded, including:
Sudden increases in attention and engagement, indicating key events or milestones in the narrative’s development.
Periods of decreased attention and engagement, potentially indicating lulls or periods of stagnation in the narrative’s progression.
Significant shifts in the narrative’s direction or tone, revealing changes in the narrative's focus or momentum.
By hovering over points on the chart you will see the main topic of discussion at a particular point in time. Clicking on a data point in the chart will show you the top content that occurred during that point in time to help you understand the context of changes in the trend line.
By analyzing the Trend Chart, you can:
Identify key moments and events that have shaped the narrative.
Understand the narrative’s momentum and how it has changed over time.
Recognise patterns and trends in the narrative's development.
What is the Narrative Evolution chart?
The Narrative Evolution chart is an interactive alluvial visualization that uses flow-based graphics to showcase the evolution of a specific narrative over time, and it’s relationship with other narratives (related narratives), which can be toggled on or off. Using the chart will help you discern how the narrative formed, where it is going and where it merged or split into multiple sub-narratives, over time.
Here's how it works:
Topics bars: Represent points of a narrative in time (days or weeks).
Topics bar height: Indicates the interest in the topic compared to other topics
Links: Connect topics and narratives to show relationships between them
Colour: Topic bars and links are colour-coded to represent different narratives. Each narrative is a different colour.
Time: The chart is arranged chronologically, with topics and links appearing in the order they emerged.
Date slider: Displays the total interest to point out high or low points in interest and allows you to move to specific periods.
By using this visualisation, you can:
Trace the development of a specific narrative over time to see what conversation/s it emerged from, what narratives are running parallel and what narratives are being created by it.
Identify key connections and relationships between narratives and themes to gain context around the selected narrative and understand how it fits into the broader conversation.
See how different topics have merged or split over time to form different narratives.
Zoom in on key events to see different angles of discussions occurring.
What is Top Content?
The Top Content chart allows you to find example content that generated the narrative and you may want to emulate for your own campaigns. By default, the content samples will be filtered by your search query from the search page to show you the most relevant part of the narrative based on the original subject you were looking for.
This feature helps you:
Identify popular and representative content.
Understand and verify how we came up with the narrative and themes
Find inspiration for your own content creation.
