How to verify your income by uploading documents

Document upload is the right path when bank or payroll connection don't apply. Here's how it works.

Document upload is one of three ways to verify your income with Rent Butter. It's the right path when bank or payroll connection don't apply β€” for example, if you're paid in cash, by paper check, or your employer doesn't use a connected payroll system.

When document upload is the right choice

Document upload works for any income type. It's especially useful when:

  • You're paid in cash or by paper check

  • Your bank doesn't show your income (you cash checks elsewhere, or your employer doesn't deposit electronically)

  • Your employer or payroll provider isn't supported by our payroll connection

  • Your income comes from a source that doesn't fit bank or payroll verification β€” for example, alimony, a trust, or investment income

If your income is direct-deposited or runs through a major payroll provider, bank or payroll verification will be faster.

What happens when you upload

You'll choose document upload as your verification method, then pick which documents you want to share. We review them to confirm your income amount and type. Most uploads are processed within one business day.

What you'll need

  • Recent, readable copies of your income documents

  • PDFs or clear photos with good lighting, no glare, and full pages visible

Step by step

  1. Choose Document upload as your income verification method

  2. Select the type of document you want to upload

  3. Upload your file β€” PDFs preferred, but JPG and PNG work too

  4. Add more if you have multiple documents

  5. Submit when you're done

Tips

  • PDFs process fastest. If your bank or payroll lets you download a PDF, use that instead of a screenshot or photo.

  • Make sure the full document is visible β€” don't crop the edges or hide details

  • If a document has multiple pages, include all pages
