How do I verify income if I have no income?

Government benefits count as income. If you genuinely have no income, here's how to complete this step.

Government benefits count as income. Social Security, SSI, unemployment, disability, and similar payments should be reported as income — they verify the same way a paycheck does.

Do you receive any benefits?

Before completing this section, check whether you receive any of the following — these all count and should be entered as income:

  • Social Security (retirement or disability)

  • SSI (Supplemental Security Income)

  • Unemployment

  • Disability or worker's compensation

  • Veterans' benefits

  • Any other recurring government payment

If yes, verify these through bank connection (the deposits show up there) or document upload (an award letter or recent benefit statement works). PDF is the preferred file format.

If you genuinely have no income

Some applicants don't have current income — for example, between jobs, supported by family, or relying on savings. You'll still need to complete the income verification step to submit your application.

To proceed:

  1. Choose Document upload as your verification method

  2. Select Upload Other Format

  3. Upload a placeholder file — any blank image or a photo with the words "no income" works

Property managers reviewing your application may ask about how you'll cover rent. If you have a cosigner, savings, or another way to show you can pay, mention it to your property manager directly.
