When you apply for a place, the property manager uses Rent Butter to verify the things they need to make a decision — your identity, your income, your rental history, and your criminal and credit background.
Why am I using Rent Butter?
You're using Rent Butter because the property manager you're applying to invited you — the link they sent leads here. You can't sign up for Rent Butter on your own; it's only used through invitations from property managers.
What you'll do
You'll work through a short application that asks you to:
Show us who you are — take a photo of your government-issued ID
Tell us about yourself — name, contact info, and current address
Show how you'll afford the rent — verify your income by connecting your bank, your payroll, or uploading documents
Tell us about where you live now — your current landlord and rent (when included)
Add the people who'll live with you or apply with you — co-applicants and occupants. If you're the primary applicant, you can invite them; in some cases the property manager adds them directly.
Review and sign the legal terms
What Rent Butter checks behind the scenes
Beyond what you fill out, Rent Butter runs criminal, eviction, and credit history checks as part of the standard screening. These are core to what property managers count on us for, and the legal terms you sign explain what's checked and how.
What property managers may also include
An application fee
Vehicle and pet details
What happens next
Once you submit, your application goes to the property manager for review. They'll reach out with a decision or any follow-up questions. Rent Butter does not make the decision for approval or denial.
