The application asks for personal information that helps Rent Butter confirm your identity and run the screening checks the property manager has set up. Here's what we collect and why each field matters.
Your name
We collect your full name — first, middle, and last, plus a suffix if applicable. The name on your application should match your government-issued ID exactly. The screening checks (criminal, credit, eviction) rely on the legal record, so a nickname or preferred name won't return reliable results.
If you don't have a middle name, you can check the option that says so to skip that field. Please do not include any special characters such as parentheses ().
Your date of birth
Your date of birth helps the screening uniquely identify you. Multiple people can share a name, but the combination of name and date of birth is much more specific — that's how we match your application to the right records. It also confirms you meet the age requirement to apply for rental housing. If you enter the current date please revise, the system will not allow you to continue.
Your Social Security Number or ITIN
Your SSN or ITIN ties your application to the right credit history and screening data. Without it, results may not match the right person. If you've never been issued one, the application has a certification checkbox you can use. SSN or ITIN isn't required for applicants under 18.
Your email and phone number
We use your contact info to send updates about your application and so the property manager can reach you with questions or a decision. We verify your phone number via a one-time code at the start of the application.
Your current address
Your current address is where you're living now. It needs to be a U.S. street address — PO Boxes aren't accepted. Your address is part of the rental history piece of the screening.
How we use and protect your information
Your personal information is used only for the screening checks tied to your application. The Privacy Policy and User Agreement (linked from the application before you submit) explain in detail how data is collected, used, and shared.
