Can I appeal a decision?

Property managers decide whether to reconsider a declined application. Here's how to follow up and what to do if you think there's a screening error.

If your application was declined, here's how to follow up β€” including who decides whether to reverse a decision and what your options are.

The property manager makes the decision

Rent Butter doesn't decide whether your application is approved or declined β€” the property manager does, based on their own rental criteria. That means the property manager is also the one who decides whether to reconsider. Rent Butter does not have details on what decision was made.

If you think the property manager should reconsider

Contact them directly. Explain your situation β€” for example, if you've corrected something that affected your application (a credit issue is now resolved, your income has changed, etc.), they can decide whether to take another look. We will not update or re-screen an application without notifying the housing provider.

If you think there's an error in your screening report

This is different from appealing the decision. If you believe your screening report contains an error (a wrong record, an outdated balance, etc.), tap Contact Us on the decline screen β€” that emails Rent Butter's disputes team. They can review the data and correct it if there's an issue.

Under federal law, you also have the right to a copy of any report used to make a decision and the right to dispute inaccurate information.

Can I just apply again to the same property?

That's up to the property manager. Some allow re-applications after a waiting period, some don't. Ask them directly.

Can I apply to other properties?

Yes. A decline at one property doesn't prevent you from applying elsewhere through Rent Butter.
