My application was declined, what should I do?

What the decline screen means, why the decision was made, and how to follow up.

If your application was declined, you'll see a screen titled "Your Rental Application" with a note that the property manager isn't able to move forward at this time. You should receive an adverse action letter directly from the housing provider. We do not have a copy of this letter.

What's on the decline screen

The screen explains you'll receive more details by email or mail in the coming days directly from the housing provider. There's also a Contact Us button on the screen if you have questions or would like a copy of your screening report.

Why the decision was made

The property manager makes the decision on every application, Rent Butter doesn't make or influence it. Each property has its own rental criteria, and the property manager evaluates the screening results against those.

Getting more details about the decision

If your application was declined based on information in a screening report (criminal, credit, eviction), you have a federal right to a copy of that report. Look for a follow-up email or letter with details, or tap Contact Us on the decline screen to email Rent Butter directly. We can assist with any dispute in relation to your credit, criminal, or eviction results. We do not have details on the decision made for your denial.

If you think something was missed or wrong

Tap Contact Us on the decline screen, that goes to Rent Butter's help desk team, who can review whether something specific to the screening data was off. For questions about the property manager's criteria, you'll need to contact them directly.

Can I reapply?

Yes. You can apply to a different property at any time. If you've addressed whatever caused the decline (e.g., your income changed, a record was corrected), the result of a future application may be different.
