What do I need if I'm self-employed?

What self-employed applicants need to provide, including SA302s, accountant letters and bank statements.

Written by Joe Wigoder

Self-employed applicants are very welcome. You'll need to have been trading for at least 6 months.

What to provide

Proof of income, either:

  • Your SA302 tax calculation or tax return (or the equivalent if you file taxes outside the UK), or

  • A reference letter from your accountant confirming your net income

One of these is always needed, even if you're also using savings or family support.

Bank statements, as original PDFs:

  • Your personal bank statements for the last 6 months

  • Your business bank statements for the last 6 months, if you have a business account

Photo ID and a selfie, through our identity check. Please have your original ID with you, as photos of an ID on a screen, scans and photocopies can't be used. The check is carried out securely by Plaid, which is certified to ISO 27001 for information security.

Want to strengthen your application?

You can combine your self-employed income with your own savings to show a stronger financial position.
