Convert Terms to Part References to Add Reference Numerals

  1. Draft your claims and abstract, being sure to identify and tag key terms manually or automatically before, during, or after you've done so.

  2. Create your figures in the Drawing Tool, using your terms as part names for the parts you create and assign to your figure elements.

  3. To convert terms to part references, thus adding reference numerals to your claims and abstract, open the Specification menu and select Add/Remove Part Numbers in Claims & Abstract.

  4. Click the Add Part Numbers in Claims & Abstract option.

  5. Review the report provided and indicate the actions you wish to take, particularly where a term has more than one part match, or has no part match.

At this time, to create part references for terms without part matches, you will need to create new parts in the Drawing Tool.

  6. Click the Add Part Numbers button to complete the selected actions.

Convert Part References to Terms to Remove Reference Numerals

  1. Create your figures in the Drawing Tool, assigning data for the parts you create to your figure elements.

It is a best practice to use terms as your part names, or convert your part names to terms to maintain the highest level of consistency.

  2. Draft your claims and abstract, inserting the appropriate part references while you do so.

  3. To convert part references to terms, thus removing reference numerals from your claims and abstract, open the Specification menu and select Add/Remove Part Numbers in Claims & Abstract.

  4. Click the Remove Part Numbers in Claims & Abstract option.

  5. Review the report provided and indicate the actions you wish to take, particularly where a part reference does not match an existing term.

  6. Click the Remove Part Numbers button to complete the selected actions.

Note that part names that aren't already tagged terms will be created as such to facilitate back-conversion to part references if necessary.
