Remote Health now offers virtual payment cards for both Android and Apple devices!
You can easily add your card to your digital wallet and use it for eligible medical expenses wherever virtual payments are accepted.
Overview
What sorts of expenses can I pay for with my SafetyWing Card?
Using the card, you can access covered healthcare services without having to pay out of your own pocket. You can pay for any appointment, service, treatment, or medication that is covered by your Remote Health plan as long as it costs less than the preset limit. This could be, for example, a check-up with your doctor, a set of glasses, a massage therapy appointment, a virtual therapy session, etc. For more expensive procedures and hospital services above this limit, we recommend asking for direct billing via your SafetyWing dashboard.
Where is the SafetyWing Card accepted?
Your card will work at most places that provide healthcare services and accept Mastercard debit. However, we check the payment information so that non-healthcare-related charges will not go through, such as restaurants or entertainment venues. In certain cases, it may be declined for legitimate health expenses due to how the merchant is categorized.
Getting started
How can I get a SafetyWing Card?
If you are on a Remote Health plan through your employer who has opted into the SafetyWing Card service, you will automatically receive an invitation by email once your coverage is active. Simply follow the instructions in the email to get started.
If you’re already a Remote Health member, you will be eligible when your annual plan renews, although it is up to your employer as to whether they will opt in.
We don’t yet offer this feature to members who pay for their own plan or if your employer has not opted into SafetyWing Cards.
Do I need to pay a fee to get the SafetyWing Card?
No, you don’t need to pay an additional fee to get your card, as the costs are embedded in the price of your plan.
When will I receive my SafetyWing Card?
Once you've ordered your card, it typically takes 2-8 weeks to arrive, depending on your location.
My card delivery is taking a long time, what should I do?
Card deliveries to some locations can take several weeks due to delays with local postal services. Once your shipment is handed off to a local postal service, the tracking code on your shipment may not update regularly or, in some cases, may be inaccurate.
If you suspect that something has gone wrong with your shipment, contact our Customer Care team, and we can cancel your order and ship you a new card.
I received my SafetyWing Card. Do I have to do anything to activate it and start using it?
Yes, once you've received your SafetyWing Card, please activate it via your SafetyWing dashboard under 'My payment card' in the left side menu. You will need to enter the last 4 digits of your card number to activate your card.
What is the difference between my account passcode and my card PIN?
Your account passcode and card PIN are both 4-digit security codes with different uses.
Account passcode: Enter it on our website to see your card details in your dashboard.
Card PIN: Enter it into a card machine at the physical point of sale.
They can be the same number to make it easy to remember, but we suggest using two different numbers for the best security.
SafetyWing will never ask you for your card PIN or passcode.
Using your SafetyWing Card
Can I use the SafetyWing Card for online transactions?
Yes, you can use your card for online transactions for medical expenses that are covered under your Remote Health plan. You can view your card details by clicking on the 'My payment card’ menu and ’View card details.'
Is there a spending limit on the SafetyWing Card?
Yes, there is a maximum spending limit, which can vary depending on your Remote Health company plan. So, your card won't work if you're trying to pay for a service above this limit. As part of our ongoing effort to improve your experience, we are actively working to increase these limits in the future.
If your medical expense is above US$150, you can request direct billing via your dashboard.
Can I check my card's balance?
At the moment, your balance is not available to view on your dashboard. Your card limit is stated in your invitation email. We encourage you to always have just one outstanding expense on your card so that you can always easily manage your card limit.
How can I reset my spending limit?
Every time you use your SafetyWing Card, you need to validate your expense by uploading the relevant documents before using it again. Once the expense has been processed as a claim and if it is approved, your spending limit will be reset.
You can only have 3 outstanding expenses on your card, meaning the claims for those expenses have not yet been approved.
If you use your card for something that is not covered under the policy, you risk losing access to your card. Expenses that are not approved will reduce your available card limit.
Can I tap my SafetyWing Card?
Yes, you should be able to swipe, tap, or insert your card. Be prepared to enter your PIN regardless of the method you use.
How do I know whether to use my SafetyWing Card or ask for direct billing?
The broad rule is to ask for direct billing from us whenever you think your procedure or treatment will cost more than US$150.
Can I use the SafetyWing Card for non-medical expenses in an emergency?
No, the card is meant to be used strictly for expenses that are covered under your Remote Health plan. Due to our filters, it may not even be accepted by non-healthcare providers or vendors.
Can I get a separate card for my dependent(s)?
No, at the moment, we can only issue one card per account.
Can family members on my plan use the SafetyWing Card?
Yes, you can use the card to pay for a family member’s health expenses covered under their Remote Health plan. Be sure to list their name in the claims form when validating the expense.
Can I use my SafetyWing Card for Nomad Insurance?
Right now, our SafetyWing Cards can only be used for expenses covered under Remote Health, and there is no option to categorize an expense under Nomad Insurance.
Claims paid by your SafetyWing Card
Do I still have to make a claim after using the SafetyWing Card?
Yes! We still have to check after every payment whether your expense is covered under your plan. There are two steps after you pay with your card, which auto-generates a claim in your dashboard:
You validate the expense by uploading supporting documents and writing a short description of what you paid for and why. This enters our usual claim review.
We process the claim with either an outcome of approved or denied. We may get in touch with you if we need more supporting documents.
What documents do I need to validate the expense?
Since we have most of the basic information already (date of service, location, payment amount), the process is much shorter, meaning you only have to write a description of what you paid for and why, as well as the usual required supporting documents:
Medical report(s)
Itemized invoice showing what you paid for
Prescription (if applicable)
Test and lab results (if applicable)
Treatment plan (if applicable)
When will my card be fully recharged?
Your card will be fully recharged once a card-paid claim has been approved. If the claim is denied, your card will not be recharged.
What should I do if the claim is not automatically generated in my claims dashboard after using my SafetyWing card?
If you can't see the claim on your claims dashboard after using your SafetyWing card, or you cannot upload any supporting documents to a claim, please contact Customer Care for assistance.
What happens if my claim is denied?
We keep track of how many expenses are found to be invalid, i.e., not covered by your plan. If your card-related claims continue to be denied, you will risk losing access to your card permanently. If you’re not sure whether something is covered, you can check by reading your plan, requesting pre-approval, or asking for clarification from our Customer Care team via live chat or email.
What does it mean for my expense to be partially approved?
Your expense may only be partially approved if, for instance, you’ve reached a limit on a specific benefit of your coverage, such as vision or dental benefits, or certain items on your invoice are not covered.
If you use the card again for something for which you've already reached your sublimit for the policy year, your claim will be denied, putting your access to the card at risk.
Issues with your SafetyWing Card
Why did my card get declined?
There can be a number of reasons why your card was declined:
The amount was over your spending limit.
The provider is not listed as a healthcare-related merchant by Mastercard.
You have a number of pending expenses that still need to be validated with supporting documents to create a valid claim.
You have a number of card-related claims that are still being processed.
You will receive an email with a reason why your card was declined.
If you’re still not sure why your card was declined, get in touch with us via live chat or email.

What happens if my SafetyWing Card is lost or stolen?
As soon as you realize your card is lost, visit 'My payment card' and click “Report lost or stolen.” In this case, we will immediately cancel the card and send you another one with new details.
I'm locked out of my SafetyWing Card - what should I do?
You can be locked out of your card for one of the following reasons:
You have too many pending expenses that have not yet been validated by uploading supporting documents to the auto-generated claim.
You have had too many card-paid claims declined.
A combination of the two.
If you have pending claims requiring action from your side, please upload your supporting documents as soon as possible.
If you have any more questions, feel free to reach out to our Customer Care team.
