Nomad Insurance Essential (Updated Version): What benefits are provided in case of a travel delay?

This article applies to the updated Nomad Insurance Essential plan version effective February 2026. If you are not sure which plan version you are under, please check with our Customer Care team.

If your trip is delayed, Nomad Insurance Essential covers food, lounge pass, and accommodation expenses based on the length of the delay:

  • For a delay of 3 to 8 hours: up to USD $60

  • For a delay of 8 hours or more: USD $150, plus an additional USD $150 per night after the initial 8 hours

  • Maximum of USD $450 per trip, and USD $900 per active insurance period

How is the delay calculated?

  • The delay is measured as the difference between your original scheduled departure time and your actual departure time.

👉 Even if your initial delay is less than 3 hours, you may still be covered if it causes missed connections that result in a total delay of 3 hours or more.

👉 For delays departing from your home country, only the shorter delay amount (USD $60) is covered.

The delay must be caused by one of the following reasons:

👉 Your scheduled transportation by airplane/bus/train/boat that you had a valid ticket for, was delayed or canceled with no replacement, for at least 3 hours. Your transportation must have been arranged by a company that has scheduled routes and ticketed passengers (so, for example, a taxi or rented bus is not covered).

👉 You were part of a traffic accident while on your way to the place of departure, which caused you to miss the original departure and your transportation was rebooked for at least 3 hours later (requires proof in the form of a police report).

Required documentation

  • Proof of original booking

  • Proof of delay and replacement booking

  • A police report if you were part of a traffic accident that caused your delay
