Nomad Insurance Essential (Updated Version): Who can get this insurance?

This article applies to the updated Nomad Insurance Essential plan version effective February 2026. If you are not sure which plan version you are under, please check with our Customer Care team.

Who can sign up for the Nomad Insurance Essential plan?

You can sign up for the Nomad Insurance Essential plan if you are:

  • Between 14 days and 69 years of age

  • Not a Cuban Citizen

  • Intending to travel outside of your home country

  • Not traveling to Iran, Cuba, North Korea, Puerto Rico, Russia, Belarus, Syria, or select regions of Ukraine: Crimea, Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia

Coverage in the United States and US territories (except Puerto Rico) is available through the US add-on. US citizens and US residents can purchase Nomad Insurance Essential, but they are not eligible for the US add-on.

You can purchase Nomad Insurance Essential even if you’ve already left your home country and started traveling.

However, it’s important to know that the Nomad Insurance Essential plan comes with an extra requirement in certain claim situations. Specifically, claims for accidents, illnesses, or incidents that took place/developed/were diagnosed within the first 72 hours from the purchase date and time of a new plan require additional documentation confirming that the time of the incident or onset of symptoms was after the purchase time and date. This means that we recommend you to plan ahead and purchase your Nomad Insurance Essential plan at least 72 hours in advance. If you’re not sure where your journey ends, there's no need to provide a return ticket.

What is my home country?

For the Nomad Insurance Essential plan, the term home country is defined as follows:

  • Where someone principally resides and receives regular mail

  • Where they would return once done traveling

  • Where they would want to be returned in case of trip interruption or repatriation

It's up to you to choose the country that best fits this definition.
