You can invest in thousands of companies and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX), New Zealand Stock Exchange (NZX), New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), Nasdaq, and Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE). You can also invest in New Zealand managed funds.

All Sharesies accounts are cash accounts. We don’t offer margin accounts, or the ability to participate in loans or margin lending.

Buy an Australian or NZ company or ETF

The process on Sharesies for placing a buy order is the same for Australian and NZ companies and ETFs. Prices for Australian and NZ investments are delayed by at least 20 minutes.

You’ll need enough Australian dollars (AUD) to place an order for Australian investments. You can exchange currency in advance, whenever you want, or you can exchange money when you place a buy order.

To place an order:

  1. Log in to Sharesies.

  2. Select Invest in the side menu.

  3. Search for an investment you wish to buy. You can use the existing search filters, or use the Search all investments box to pop in your own search term. Select See all for further options, such as filtering by exchange or types of investments.

  4. Once you’ve completed your search, select the company you’re keen to invest in.

  5. Select the pink Buy button in the bottom right corner.

  6. Choose whether you want to place a market order or a limit order in fractional or whole shares. If you don’t have enough money in the correct currency, you’ll be prompted to top up your Sharesies Wallet.

  7. On the review page, check that your order details are correct and any fees that will apply, then select the pink Buy button to place your order.

Buy an NZ managed fund

  1. Log in to Sharesies.

  2. Select Invest in the side menu.

  3. Search for a managed fund you wish to buy. You can use the existing ‘Managed funds’ filter, or use the Search all investments box to pop in your own search term.

  4. Select the managed fund you’re keen to invest in.

  5. Select the pink Buy button in the bottom right corner.

  6. Enter the dollar amount you wish to invest.

  7. Read and accept the fund’s Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) if applicable.

  8. Check your order details are correct. If all looks good as gold, click the Buy button to place your order.

Processing times for managed funds

Buy a US investment

The process for placing a buy order is the same for US companies and ETFs. If you haven’t bought US investments before, you’ll need to give us some extra tax info. Prices for US investments are delayed by at least 20 minutes. If you want to invest in a company that’s an American depositary receipt (ADR), there are some extra details you should know before investing.

You’ll need US dollars (USD) to buy US investments. You can exchange currencies in advance, whenever you want, or you can exchange money when you place a buy order.

To place an order:

  1. Log in to Sharesies.

  2. Select Invest in the side menu.

  3. Search for an investment you wish to buy. You can use the existing search filters, or use the Search all investments box to pop in your own search term. Select See all for further options, such as filtering by exchange or types of investments.

  4. Once you’ve completed your search, select the company you’re keen to invest in.

  5. Select the pink Buy button in the bottom right corner.

  6. Before investing in US shares, you’ll need to answer a few questions and complete a W-8 BEN tax form (or W-9 form if you’re a US citizen or green card holder).

  7. Choose whether you want to place a market order or limit order. You can place a limit order in whole shares only. If you don’t have enough money in the local currency, you’ll be prompted to top up your Wallet.

  8. Check that your order details are correct, then select the pink Buy button to place your order.
