What is a dropped hold?

You may see transactions from Sherpa as 'Pending' until your lesson is completed.

Sherpa is set up to make paying for your lessons as easy as possible.

24 hours before a lesson is due to take place, Sherpa will place a 'hold' on your card for the lesson amount.

For most banks, this means the hold will show under 'Pending Transactions' in your mobile banking app.

When your lesson is completed, Sherpa will actually take the funds for the lesson, which means the payment will show up on your bank statement as normal.

If a lesson is cancelled, we'll just drop the hold. This means funds are available back in your bank within a few hours of the hold being dropped.

Why is the money not showing back in my account?

Different banks treat holds differently. We've described the most common methods for how banks handle dropped holds below:

Method 1: The pending transaction just disappears.

Most older banks (i.e. Lloyds, Nationwide, Natwest etc) will simply remove the row from the "Pending Transactions" tab a few hours after the hold is dropped. You'll never see the money leave your account.

Method 2: The funds show as a credit back into your account

Some banks, for example Monzo, will treat the hold as a transaction, but add the credit back into your account when the hold is dropped:

Sherpa will never take more than one payment for a lesson. If you're struggling to match up a lesson to a hold, get in touch with our support who will be able to provide you with a tracking number so you're able to match this up with your bank.

Why are there multiple holds for one lesson?

When a lesson is moved to more than 24 hours in advance after a hold has been placed, Sherpa drops the hold that was taken for a lesson.

We do this to ensure that we're not holding more funds than we need to on your card.

24 hours before the lesson time, we'll place a new hold on your card for the lesson.

We'll never take more than 1 payment for a lesson and any dropped holds should be shown in your mobile banking app within a few hours.
