An exit coupon is a discount that appears when a customer is about to leave the checkout — a last-chance offer to bring them back. You can control who sees it (for eg. using a minimum cart value), how many times it can be triggered in a single session, and how many times any one customer can use it, and more. This makes it an effective tool for recovering drop-offs without over-discounting.
When to Use an Exit Coupon
Use exit coupons when you want to reduce checkout abandonment by offering a targeted discount to customers who show intent to leave. Setting a minimum cart value ensures the offer only reaches shoppers who are already close to converting — keeping costs predictable and reducing misuse.
How to Create an Exit Coupon
Step 1: Go to the Discounts page in your Shopflo dashboard and select Exit Coupons from the left navigation.
Step 2: If you haven't created an exit coupon before, you'll see an empty state. Click Create Exit Coupon in the centre of the screen, or the Create Discount button in the top right.
Step 3: Enter a clear, descriptive title for your exit coupon.
Step 4: Set the discount value you want to offer (for example, ₹125 off). Then set a minimum cart value as the purchase condition — this ensures the coupon only appears for customers who have a meaningful amount in their cart, acting as a first safeguard against misuse.
Setting Usage Limits
Exit coupons have few usage controls that work together to prevent customers from gaming the offer by repeatedly triggering the exit popup. We'll be using two of the controls which are most important for this tutorial.
Step 5: Set the exit trigger limit to 1. This controls how many times the exit coupon popup can appear within a single checkout session. Setting it to 1 means a customer who exits and returns won't see the offer a second time in the same session.
Step 6: Set the Each shopper can use limit to 1. This is the most important control — it ensures the same customer cannot claim the discount more than once, even across multiple sessions. Without this, a customer could repeatedly drop off to trigger the offer.
Review and Save
Step 7: Once everything looks good, click Save and the Publish. Your exit coupon is now active and will appear to qualifying customers when they attempt to leave checkout.
