Before diving into income or deductions, the first step in preparing a return is entering your client’s basic information. This sets the foundation for the rest of the tax return, so accuracy is key!

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Click on “Basic Information”
From the main menu of the return, locate and click the “Basic Information” section.

2. Select the Correct Filing Status
Choose the client’s appropriate filing status (e.g., Single, Head of Household, Married Filing Joint, etc.). Make sure to confirm it with the client.

3. Enter the Client’s Personal Details
Fill in all required fields including:

  • First name

  • Last name

  • Social Security Number (SSN)

  • Date of birth

  • Occupation

4. Enter the Current Mailing Address
Include:

  • Street and apartment number (if applicable)

  • Zip code (this should automatically populate the correct city and state—double-check it for accuracy)

5. Add Contact Information
Input the client’s phone number and email address for any follow-up or IRS notifications.

6. Click “Continue”
This will save the basic info and move you forward in the return.

Important to note:

  • Double-check the SSN and date of birth mistakes here can delay the return.

  • Ensure the email is valid and accessible to the client.

  • If the ZIP code doesn't auto-fill correctly, verify the address with the USPS ZIP Code Lookup tool.
