Understanding Sound Recording Metadata

When you're actively managing a catalog, it's important to make sure that you're including as much information to the included assets as possible. Although none are required (except for Title), you and your team will benefit from filling out as many fields as you can. Adding details to songs and recordings within Songspace helps you to find exactly what you're looking for when you need it - for example, if you're curating a pitch for a TV show that needs a love song, you might want to search for all of your songs and recordings that are tagged with "love" or "love song".

There are several metadata fields on recordings in Songspace - below is a complete list:

  • Recording Type: The type of recording - your options are: Unknown/Unspecified, Demo, Master, Master (Commercially Released), Master (Unreleased), Live Performance, Instrumental Version of Release, Promotional/Sampler, Mix (Unreleased), Rough, Worktape, Video, Film/TV Cue/Theme, Trailer, Advertisement, Production Music, Stem/Loop/Effect, Excerpt/Snippet, Karaoke, and Idea/Concept.

  • Master Rights: A checkbox to be checked if your company controls the or represents the master recording for third-party licensing.

  • Current rights owner name: The name of the current rights owner.

  • Recording is Primary Recording: A yes or no option to designate whether or not the recording is the primary recording.

  • Parental Warning Type: A dropdown list that allows you to select if the Release is Explicit, Not Explicit, and more.

  • Recording is instrumental: A checkbox to be checked if the recording is an instrumental.

  • Recording Contains Sample(s): A checkbox to be checked if the recording contains sample(s).

  • Recording version: A dropdown that allows you to select the version of this recording - Original, Cover, or Re-record.

  • BPM: The BPM of the recording.

  • Duration: The auto-populated duration of the recording.

  • Key: The key of the recording to be selected from a drop-down of 24 options.

  • Tempo: The tempo of the recording to be selected from a drop-down menu of 5 options.

  • Decade: The decade that the recording is from to be selected from a drop-down menu of 31 options.

  • Time signature: The time signature of the recording to be selected from a drop-down of 18 options.

  • Language: The language that the recording is in.

  • Original title: The original recording title.

  • Display title: The display title for the recording.

  • Original sub title: The original recording sub title.

  • Display sub title: The display sub title for the recording.

  • Preferred ISRC: The ISRC associated to the recording.

  • Artist Name: The recording artist - you can select Main Artist or Featured Artist.

  • Custom Display Artist Name: The display name of the Artist on the recording.

  • Contributors: Any contributors for the recording (click here to learn more).

  • Commissioned by: The label that commissioned the recording.

  • Release Record Label(s): The record label(s) associated to the Release.

  • Recording has been released: A checkbox that allows you to select whether or not the recording has been released.

  • First Released Year: The year that the recording was first released.

  • First Released Date: The date that the recording was first released in MM/DD/YYYY format.

  • Release information: The Release that the recording is associated to.

  • Advanced Details: Recorded Country, Recorded Location, Recorded Year, Recorded Date (MM/DD/YYYY), DDEX Version Type, DDEX Sound Recording Type, DDEX Audio Codec Type, DDEX Container Format, CWR Recording Technique, and DDEX Audio Channels.

  • Genres: The genres associated to the recording (from a pre-populated list).

  • Tags: The tags associated to the recording.

  • Moods: Any moods associated to the recording - you can use an option from our pre-populated list or create your own.

  • Themes: Any themes that appear in the recording - you can use an option from our pre-populated list or create your own.

  • Vocals: Any information related to the vocals on the recording (such as Male, Female, etc.) - you can use an option from our pre-populated list or create your own.

  • Instruments: The instruments on the recording - you can use an option from our pre-populated list or create your own.

  • Notes: Any notes you'd like to add and store within the recording.

Most of these fields can be used to filter your catalog so that you can find the exact recording you're looking for when you need it. Additionally, you can create a Smart Playlist to pull in any songs that have an associated recording with a certain value in these fields.
