Tac Leg Maintenance

The Tac-Leg design is a self-contained unit that generally does not require much maintenance. Regular wiping with a clean cloth should suffice. However, if a deeper clean is necessary, the following instructions can guide you through the disassembly and reassembly process.

Before attempting to separate the upper and lower leg, consider if the cleaning can be achieved by removing the foot tip from the bipod. This can be done by using an 11mm spanner on the flats of the foot tip.

Removing the foot tip will provide access to the inside of the lower leg, allowing you to flush it with clean water and remove any loose dirt. For more stubborn dirt, you can use a long-shafted swab to gently clean inside the lower leg.

To prevent the foot tips from loosening during use, apply medium strength thread lock. This will ensure that the foot tips stay securely in place. If the foot tips wear out over time, replacements are available from Spartan.

Disassembly

In extreme cases where deeper cleaning is necessary, it is possible to separate the upper and lower legs with caution. Locate the screw that holds these sections together (fully compress the leg to see it).

If using a clamp to hold the leg, ensure it only grips the metal components and not the carbon fiber parts.

The screws are thread-locked in place, so use a well-fitting 2.5 mm hex wrench to loosen them. They might be tight, and if they don't loosen under moderate pressure, applying heat may be necessary to soften the thread lock bond. Take care not to damage the screw head flats by applying excessive force or using a poorly fitting tool.

To apply heat, use an electric soldering iron with a tinted tip directly on the screw head. Avoid allowing the heat to spread to the main foot piece or carbon lower leg. Once the heat has penetrated the screw's thread, it can be fully loosened. Do not use a naked flame for this process.

With the screw loosened, separate the upper leg from the lower leg. Ensure the screw and leg-stop piece remains inside the lower leg.

Now you have access to the leg sections, gently clean the working parts with clean water and a mild detergent if necessary. Thoroughly dry the parts before reassembly.

Reassembly

In the lower leg, you can see the black-colored leg-locking piece, which prevents the separation of the upper and lower leg sections.

The fastening screw fits through a hole in this piece and threads into the upper leg section from below. Make sure the screw thread is in the correct position for reassembly.

To reassemble the leg, apply a small amount of thread lock to the female thread of the upper leg.

Reinstall the upper leg into the lower leg, pressing the height adjustment lever if needed. Slide the upper leg down inside the lower leg while compressing the spring under the locking piece.

Once the upper leg is fully installed into the lower leg, it should be pressed against the top face of the leg-locking piece, allowing the screw head to be accessible from the foot of the lower leg section. This eliminates the need for extra-long hex keys.

Finally, tighten the screw into the upper leg using a 2.5mm hex key. Occasionally, the components may require slight realignment to ensure they line up properly.
