Right, let's talk about the money plumbing. π°
If you've signed up to Spenny Piggy, you've probably already connected Stripe β or you're about to. Either way, you should know what's actually happening under the hood, because this is the difference between Spenny Piggy and every other creator platform out there.
Spoiler: it's also why we can pay you faster, more transparently, and with less drama. π
The 30-Second Version β±οΈ
β Every Spenny Piggy creator has their own Stripe Connect account.
β Payments go directly to YOUR Stripe account β not ours.
β You're the Merchant of Record for every transaction (we'll explain).
β Stripe sends payouts to your bank weekly (every Friday).
β We never hold your money. Stripe does the holding. You do the spending. πΈ
ow let's break it down properly.
What is Stripe Connect? π€
Stripe is one of the biggest payment processors on the planet. They power payments for Amazon, Shopify, Lyft, Deliveroo, and approximately ten thousand other businesses you've heard of.
Stripe Connect is their specific product for platforms with multiple sellers β marketplaces, two-sided platforms, exactly the kind of thing Spenny Piggy is.
Here's how it works on Spenny Piggy specifically:
π· Spenny Piggy = the platform (we provide the tech, the website, the supporter experience)
π³ Stripe Connect = the payment infrastructure (handles all the money movement) π YOU = the actual seller (you provide the content/products to supporters)
π Supporters = the buyers (they pay for your stuff)
When a supporter pays you on Spenny Piggy, the payment flows like this:
Supporter pays β Stripe processes β Your Stripe Connect account
We never touch the money. It goes from the supporter's card straight to your Stripe account. We just route the transaction. π
What's "Merchant of Record" and why does it matter? π
This is the bit that makes Spenny Piggy different from most creator platforms.
The traditional creator platform model
On most platforms (think Patreon, OnlyFans, Ko-fi, Cameo etc):
The platform is the seller
Supporters pay the platform
The platform takes its cut
The platform pays the creator (eventually)
This means the platform holds your money, decides when to pay you out, and is the legal seller of your content. You're effectively contracted to them. π¬
The Spenny Piggy model
You are the Merchant of Record (MoR) for every transaction on your account. That means:
β You are the legal seller
β You receive the payment directly
β You own the relationship with your supporter
β You are responsible for delivering your content
β We facilitate the platform but never sit between you and your money
What this means in plain English π·
Imagine you sell merch at a market stall.
Traditional creator platform = the market organiser collects every customer's payment, keeps it for 30+ days, takes their fee, and eventually hands you what's left.
Spenny Piggy = customers pay you directly. The market organiser (us) just provides the stall, the foot traffic, the security guards, and the receipt printer. The money is yours from the moment the sale happens. β¨
This is genuinely better for creators. More control, faster payouts, real ownership of your income. It's also more responsibility β but we'll cover what that means below.
For the deeper dive, our blog post Why Random Creator Payments Can Cause Banking Problems is worth a read.
What you're responsible for as Merchant of Record π
Being MoR comes with real responsibilities. Here's what's on you:
1. Delivering your content / products β
You promised it, you deliver it. Whether that's a Telegram drop, a piece of locked content, a custom shoutout, or a t-shirt in the post. Spenny Piggy doesn't fulfil for you.
2. Your own taxes πΈ
You're self-employed (or running a business). HMRC/IRS/your local tax authority sees you as the business owner. We give you all the earnings statements you need, but you file your own taxes. For UK creators specifically, read our UK Creator Tax Guide 2026.
3. Refund decisions (with support) π
If a supporter requests a refund, you handle it via your dashboard. Spenny Piggy provides the tools, the evidence pack, and platform-level support β but you're the one making the call. We'll cover this in detail in another article.
4. Following platform rules βοΈ
Your account is yours, but you operate it within our Terms of Service. Break those and we can pause or terminate your account. (Don't break them and you'll be fine. π)
What Spenny Piggy is responsible for π‘οΈ
Plenty. Here's what we handle on your behalf:
1. Fraud monitoring π¨
We monitor every transaction for suspicious patterns. Fraudulent supporters get blocked before they hit your account.
2. Chargeback support π‘οΈ
If a supporter disputes a payment with their bank, we provide a full dispute evidence pack (transaction details, content delivery proof, terms accepted, etc.) so you can win the case. See our How Spenny Piggy Protects Creators Against Chargebacks blog.
3. Compliance and KYC π
We handle identity verification, sanctions screening, and ongoing compliance with Stripe, banks, and payment regulators. You just upload your passport once.
4. Platform infrastructure π§
The website, the dashboard, the payment processing, the receipts, the email notifications β all on us.
5. Reserves and risk management π‘οΈ
For new creators and high-risk transactions, we apply rolling reserves (typically 10%) to protect against chargebacks. The funds release on a schedule. This protects you from getting wiped out by a sudden dispute spike.
Setting up your Stripe Connect account π οΈ
You'll do this during signup. Quick walkthrough:
Step 1: From your Spenny Piggy dashboard, click "Connect Stripe"
This takes you to Stripe's secure setup page. Spenny Piggy never sees your full bank details β Stripe does.
Step 2: Enter your business details
Country/region
Type of business (Individual / Sole Trader / Company)
Personal info (name, DOB, address)
Tax identification (where applicable)
Step 3: Add your bank account
This is where Stripe will deposit your weekly payouts.
Step 4: Verify your identity (Stripe's own check, separate from ours)
Stripe runs its own KYC. Usually instant. Occasionally they'll ask for additional docs (passport, proof of address).
Step 5: Submit and wait for approval
Most accounts approve in minutes. Occasionally takes a few days if Stripe needs to manually review something.
Once approved, you're live and ready to receive payments. πΈ
How payouts work π
This is everyone's favourite question, so let's nail it:
The schedule
ποΈ Earnings period: Friday 00:00 to Thursday 23:59
ποΈ Payout day: Following Friday
πΈ Arrival in your bank:Typically 1-3 business days after payout day
So if you earn Β£200 between Friday 1st March and Thursday 7th March, that Β£200 (minus any reserves) pays out on Friday 8th March and lands in your bank the following week.
What gets deducted before payout
βοΈ Any refunds you've issued
βοΈ Any chargebacks you've lost
βοΈ Any reserves being held
βοΈ Stripe processing fees (already covered by supporter at checkout β usually no impact here)
You keep 100% of your listed price β the supporter covers fees at checkout. For more on how fees work, see Why Spenny Piggy Charges Platform Fees.
Tracking everything
From your dashboard, you can see:
π Real-time earnings (every payment as it lands)
π Reserves currently held (with release schedule)
π Past payouts (date, amount, status)
π Pending refunds/chargebacks
π Monthly and annual statements (PDF + CSV downloads)
Why we use Stripe Connect (and not something else) π€
You might be wondering why we built on Stripe rather than other options. Quick answer:
β Trusted globally β banks, regulators, and supporters trust Stripe
β Direct creator ownership β money flows directly to YOUR account
β Fast payouts β weekly, not monthly
β Multi-currency support β pay/receive in 135+ currencies
β Mature dispute system β Stripe's chargeback handling is industry-leading
β Strong fraud protectionβ Stripe Radar catches a lot before it ever reaches you
Some platforms route payments through their own internal wallets (longer holds, more risk). We chose Stripe Connect specifically because it's the gold standard for protecting creator income. π
Common questions π€
"Can I use my existing Stripe account?"
Yes β if you already have a Stripe account, you can connect it during setup. β¨
"What if Stripe rejects my application?"
Stripe will tell you why (usually a missing doc or address mismatch). Most rejections are easily fixed by resubmitting. If you're stuck, hit the chat bubble and we'll help.
π¬
"Can I switch which bank account my payouts go to?"
Yes β update your bank details directly in your Stripe Connect dashboard. Changes typically take effect from your next payout. π¦
"What if I want to pause payouts?"
You can pause payouts via your dashboard β useful if you're going on holiday or want to bulk up funds before withdrawing.
"Does Stripe have its own fees?"
Yes, but supporters cover them at checkout. You don't pay Stripe fees directly. They're built into the supporter's total. β
"What if Stripe holds my account for review?"
Stripe occasionally reviews high-value accounts or accounts with unusual activity. They'll contact you directly with what they need. We can help liaise with them if needed.
"Can I see exactly what Stripe is doing with my money?"
Yes β your Stripe dashboard (separate from your Spenny Piggy dashboard) gives you a granular view of every transaction, fee, refund, and payout. You have direct access. β¨
"What if I'm based in a country Stripe doesn't support?"
Currently, Stripe Connect supports 40+ countries. If you're in an unsupported region, unfortunately we can't onboard you yet β but we're working on expanding. Check Stripe's supported countries list for the latest. π
TL;DR π―
You own your Stripe Connect account. We don't.
Payments go directly to you. We never hold the money.
You're the Merchant of Record. More control, more ownership.
Payouts run weekly. Friday earnings period β following Friday payout.
You keep 100% of your listed price. Supporters cover fees.
This is what "creator-first" actually looks like when the infrastructure backs it up. β¨
