How Do I Handle a No-Show Player?

If a player doesn't show up to a session, they will still be automatically charged 1 hour after the session start time, the same as any other session. What you do after that is up to you. This article covers your options.

Will a no-show player be charged?

Yes. If a player is signed up for a session and does not skip in advance, they will be charged automatically 1 hour after the session start time regardless of whether they attended.

What are my options when a player no-shows?

You have several options depending on the situation:

Issue a refund

If you feel the player deserves a refund - for example, if they had a genuine emergency - you can issue one directly from your Payouts page within 14 days of the charge.

See How Do I Give my Players a Refund? for steps.

Set their price to zero for the session

If you want to waive the charge without going through the full refund process, you can reduce the player's price to zero for that session.

See How do I Edit a Player's Price in an Adventure? for steps.

Skip the session on their behalf

If the player contacted you before the session but forgot to skip themselves, you can skip the session on their behalf.

See Can I Skip a Session for My Player? for steps.

Remove them from the game

If a player repeatedly no-shows and you no longer want them in your game, you can remove them from the Adventure entirely. See How do I Remove a Player from my Game? for steps.

Do I have to do anything?

No. If you choose to take no action, the player will be charged as normal and remain in your game. The decision to refund, waive, or remove a player is entirely at your discretion.

StartPlaying advises that if a player has no-showed for 2 sessions with no response that you remove them from the game.

What if the player contacts me after being charged?

If a player reaches out after being charged for a session they missed, the choice to issue a refund is yours.

There is no obligation to refund a no-show, but doing so can help maintain a positive relationship with your players.

You have 14 days from the charge date to issue a refund directly. After that, contact our support team via the chat below.

What if a player keeps no-showing?

There is no formal StartPlaying policy on repeated no-shows, but as a best practice we recommend removing players who repeatedly miss sessions without notice.

A player who consistently no-shows takes up a seat that could go to a more engaged player. Keeping your table active and your game healthy for everyone involved.

If you decide to remove a repeat no-show, see How do I Remove a Player from my Game? for steps.

Before removing them, it's worth sending a quick message to check in. Sometimes life gets in the way and a simple conversation is all it takes!
