Custom Roles Overview + FAQs

Learn all about customizing TalkingPoints roles to give various permissions to your staff.

Updated this week

Since many TalkingPoints district partners have a need for more flexibility in assigning roles and related permissions, we are excited to introduce Custom Roles for districts as part of our enhanced solution for Back-to-School 2024.

In addition to the built-in set of base roles that partners can use “out-of-the-box”, the custom roles functionality allows partners to create new roles that will meet the district's specific needs. Roles are variable collections of permissions that grant users access to specific functionality within the TalkingPoints platform. Partners can assign roles to staff to manage their level of access to TalkingPoints (teacher-level, school-level, district-level).

Custom roles and permissions give districts the flexibility they need without compromising security or privacy.

FAQs

When will custom roles be available?

Custom roles were released for general availability to all district partners on June 5, 2024.

Can school-only partners use custom roles?

No, this feature is only available for district partners. School-only partners can use our base roles, which are listed here.

Can permissions from one access level and another access level be combined?

No, holding a role with permissions at the District Level grants a user access to the district product and functionality within the district product. To access the school level and school-level functionality, a user must also hold a school-level role and so on.

Do all partners still get access to base roles? If so, can the base role permissions be edited?

Base roles are included for all school and district partners. The platform comes with a set of base roles with each having predefined permissions. These permissions cannot be changed by the partner. For more details on base roles on permissions, click here.

How do custom roles work?

District-level roles with staff management permissions can do the following:

Who will be able to see and use district-created custom roles?

  • District-level roles with staff management permissions will see district, school, and teacher-level custom roles

  • School-level roles with staff management permissions will see school and teacher-level custom roles

  • Teacher-level roles do not have staff management capabilities, but they may be assigned a teacher-level custom role
