What Do the Marking Colors Mean?

Each color used on the ground represents a different type of underground utility. Knowing what they mean can help you identify what's buried before you dig.


Standard Color Codes

  • πŸ”΄ Red – Electric power lines, cables, conduit, and lighting cables

  • 🟑 Yellow – Gas, oil, steam, petroleum, or other flammable materials

  • πŸ”΅ Blue – Potable water

  • 🟒 Green – Sewers and drain lines

  • 🟣 Purple – Reclaimed water, irrigation, and slurry lines

  • 🟠 Orange – Communication, alarm, or signal lines, cables, or conduits

  • βšͺ White – Proposed excavation area (used by the excavator to show intent)
