How to Connect Your Google Sheet as a Data Source

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Tinkery makes it easy to connect live data from your Google Sheets — no downloads or manual uploads needed. Once connected, your Google Sheet is copied into your active Project, where it can be analyzed and transformed without impacting your original file.

Here’s how to do it:

1. Go to the Data Sources Module

Click the 📄 Data Sources icon (5th from the top) in the left-hand navigation bar.

2. Click “+ Create Data Source”

You'll find this button in the top-right corner of the Data Sources view.

3. Choose Google Sheets as your method of upload

Select the Google Sheets option from the list of available upload methods.

4. Provide Sheet Details

Paste in:

  • The name of the Google Sheet

  • The full Google Sheet link (URL)

Once both are added, Click Connect with Google.

⚠️ Make sure the sheet is stored in a Google account you have access to.

5. Authorize Tinkery to Access Your Google Drive

You’ll be redirected to a secure Google login page.

👉 Select the account that owns the Google Sheet

👉 Click Allow to give Tinkery permission to access the file

🔐 Tinkery only pulls the file you select — and stores a copy inside your project. It never edits the original.

6. File is Added Automatically

Once permissions are granted, the file will be pulled and added to your Data Sources list automatically.

✅ Don’t forget: A connected data source must be linked to a Project to become active.

Best Practices

  • Double-check sharing settings: The Google Sheet must be shared with the Google account you’re authenticating with.

  • Use clear sheet names and tab titles to help Tinkery identify data structures faster.

  • If your sheet has multiple tabs, Tinkery will treat each tab as a potential table.

What’s Next?

Once connected:

➡️ Tinkery copies the data

➡️ Extracts usable tables

➡️ And prepares the workspace so you can start analyzing
