In many cases after an event with multiple divisions or flights, there is a shootout. The best teams (or players) from each flight or division move on to the shootout to compete against each other.
Sometimes the leaderboard is updated live during the shootout. Other times, the leaderboard is not updated until the shootout is complete. We will discuss how to do both in this article.
Shootouts typically use 1) a set number of holes with a set number of players or 2) Sudden Death
Set Number of Holes and Players: One team or player is eliminated every hole. For instance, if there are 10 teams/players in the shootout, then 9 holes will be played. Ties are broken by chip off or some other similar game.
Sudden Death: Teams/Players with the best score on the hole move on. The other teams are eliminated. Sometimes the shootout starts on hole #1 and continues the normal sequence of holes. Or the sequence is changed. For instance, maybe the shootout needs to stay close to the clubhouse so the order goes hole #1 to 2 to 17 to 18 to 1.
Setting up the Shootout:
Below are the steps to create a shootout:
Add the Shootout Round:
Go to Calendar > Add Round. Add the round on the date that the shootout takes place.
Create the Pairings for the Shootout Round:
It is not uncommon to have 10+ players in a group together playing. Creating tensomes in our system is not possible. However, as long as the teams or players are included anywhere in the pairings for the shootout round, then the leaderboard will score and display correctly.
Go to Rounds > Create New Pairings > Manual Pairings
If the shootout includes teams, select "Create Manual Foursomes by 2-person teams". Click on two teams in the shootout and create foursome. Then create foursomes for the remaining shootout teams. Again, it does not matter what foursome everyone is playing in, just ensure every shootout team is in the pairings. If the shootout includes individuals select "Create Manual Foursomes by Player" and assign all the shootout players to a foursome.
After pairings are created, set the course/tee for all the players. Make sure to select front 9, back 9, or all 18, depending on where the shootout is played. If an unusual sequence of holes is used, then you will need to go to Course Details to create a custom course.Create Shootout Tournament:
Go to Rounds > Tournaments > New Tournament
Create a stroke play tournament relevant to the format you are playing. If the shootout includes individual players, then select player v field stroke play. If the shootout includes teams, select "the tee sheet will be organized by team...", team(pair) v. field. Then select best ball, alternate shot or whatever type of format that is being played in the Balls selector.Go to Rounds > Handicap Analysis to ensure handicaps are correctly computed. You can click on the player or team to adjust the handicaps if needed.
Move the Round to In Progress & Enable Mobile Score Entry, if using live scoring.
Manage the Leaderboard:
If a live leaderboard is not required, then after the shootout is finished, go to Rounds > Display Leaderboard > Adjust Leaderboard.
Key in their finished position in the shootout (see sequence below) and click "Done Adjusting.
If live scoring is used enter hole-by-hole scores as you usually do. To eliminate players or teams from the shootout go to Rounds > Enter Scores
Click on the player or one of the player's on the eliminated team and change their status to DNF. Save the status, then click "Done Entering Scores".
The live leaderboard will look something like above. As players or players of teams are marked as DNF, they will be moved below the leaderboard while the remaining players/teams remain active at the top. Eventually all players or teams will be DNFed except the winning team.
