How can I set up a handicapped (Net) Parent-Child Alternate Shot Tournament?

Updated over 4 months ago

Q: We play a handicapped (net) alternate shot in our Parent-Child Tournament. If the parent has multiple children, each child/parent combo is considered a team. Because this format requires the pairings to be organized by team, I am unable to properly organize the pairings so that a team is created for every parent/child combo and handicaps are calculated. How can I set up this type of format?

A: This setup is possible. It should be noted that this is not an ideal setup, and there will be some disadvantages (as stated below). When working with this setup, you should note the following:

  • This setup will not work with Flights, as players cannot be in multiple flights.

  • This setup will not work with Teams, as the pairing need to be organized by team for an alternate shot.

  • For parents in multiple Divisions, the parent will appear on the leaderboard twice (once in a team with the child and again as an individual with no scores (NS when completed)). This will occur in the division of the child they are added as a blind with on the pairing (and NS when completed).

Note: If you wish to set this up with flight, teams, or without disturbances of the leaderboard, you could add the parent to the roster multiple times.

To set up a handicapped alternate shot Parent-Child Tournament, follow these instructions:

  1. Create Divisions (if needed). If creating division, the parent must be included in all the divisions their children play in.

  2. If you have a parent playing with three children, set the pairing size to sixsomes. To do this go to Event/League > Event/League Pairings > Round & Scheduling > Pairing Size. Set the pairing size to sixsomes (as shown below).

  3. Create the pairings manually. When creating the pairings:

    1. Each pairing group should include all parent/child combos for a family.

    2. Create pairings with the children in the pairing group's 1, 3, and 5 positions (if necessary).

    3. Add the parent into pairing position 2.

    4. Add parent as a blind into the 4 and 6 positions (if necessary).

  4. Set up the tournament. The tournament should be set up as pair v. field (as shown below).

As an option for the leaderboard display issue to show the parents as their own team, you could create unique tournaments for each division and use the Advanced Display settings to show the actual number of pairs in the division (as shown below).
