Update the Points and Tier Points balance in TravelSmarter

How to keep your loyalty points, miles, and Tier Points accurate in TravelSmarter - edit points for individual flights or update your total balance in bulk through your Wallet or Profile

Written by Joel Waldhoff

How to Update Your Points and Tier Points Balance:

⚠️ Tier Points are annual, not lifetime.

When updating your Tier Points balance, please enter your current qualification-year total exactly as shown in your airline app - not your lifetime accumulated total. Tier Points reset at the end of each qualification year, so only the points earned during the current year count toward your status.

For Avios/Miles, enter your full current balance, as these do not reset annually.

TravelSmarter does not automatically sync with airline systems in real time. When your airline credits new points or Tier Points - after a flight, a credit card spend, or a promotion - you need to update your balance in TravelSmarter manually to keep everything accurate.

This applies to all loyalty currencies, including Avios and Tier Points (British Airways), AAdvantage Miles and Loyalty Points (American Airlines), and any other programme you have connected.

There are two ways to do this, depending on how much control you want:

  • Method 1 - Edit at flight level (recommended): Update the points on each individual flight to match exactly what your airline credited. This gives you the most accurate, flight-by-flight breakdown.

  • Method 2 - Bulk update via Wallet or Profile: Enter your total current balance directly, as shown by your airline or loyalty platform. This is faster when you want to quickly reconcile your overall total without editing each flight.

Where to Find Your Current Balance:

Before updating TravelSmarter, check your actual balance directly with your airline:

  • British Airways (Avios + Tier Points): Log in at ba.com or the British Airways app. Both your Avios balance and Tier Points tally are shown on your Executive Club account page. Use the current qualification-year Tier Points figure, not the lifetime total.

  • American Airlines (AAdvantage Miles + Loyalty Points): Log in at aa.com or the American Airlines app. Your AAdvantage Miles and Loyalty Points balance are on your AAdvantage account page. Use the current qualification-year Loyalty Points figure.

  • Other programmes: Log in to the relevant airline or hotel programme website and locate your member account summary.

Method 1 - Edit Points at Flight Level (Recommended):

Editing points at flight level gives you precise, flight-by-flight control. This is the best option if you want TravelSmarter's calculations to exactly reflect what each flight actually earned, rather than just an overall total.

  • Click Flight Log in the left-hand navigation menu.

  • Find the flight you want to update in the table.

  • Click the pencil (edit) icon on the right side of that flight row.

  • Update the Points and/or Tier Points fields to match the exact amounts your airline credited for that flight.

  • Click Save. The flight record updates immediately and all linked pages recalculate.

This method is especially useful when an airline credits a different amount than TravelSmarter estimated - for example, due to a status bonus, a promotional multiplier, or a partner flight earning at a different rate.

Method 2 - Bulk Update via the Loyalty Wallet:

If you want to quickly adjust your total balance to match your airline's current figure - without editing each flight individually - use the Loyalty Wallet. This is the fastest method when reconciling after multiple flights, a credit card statement, or a promotional credit.

  • Click Wallet in the left-hand navigation menu.

  • Find the programme you want to update in the table (e.g. British Airways or American Airlines).

  • Click the Edit button next to the Balance column for that programme.

  • Enter your current total points or miles balance exactly as shown by your airline or loyalty platform. For Tier Points, enter the annual qualification-year figure only.

  • Click Save. The balance updates immediately across all pages.

Repeat for each programme you need to reconcile. The Wallet shows all your connected Airlines, Hotels, and Cards in one table, making it efficient when you have multiple programmes to update at once.

Method 3 - Bulk Update via Your Profile:

The Profile page offers the same bulk update option as the Wallet, via the Connected Programs section.

  • Click Profile in the left-hand navigation menu.

  • Scroll to the Connected Programs section.

  • Find the programme you want to update and click Edit.

  • Update the points or miles balance to match your airline's current figure. Remember: Tier Points = annual total, Miles/Avios = full current balance.

  • Click Save.

Tier Points vs Miles - What Each Balance Means

Most programmes carry two separate balances. Both can be updated independently using any of the methods above:

  • Tier Points / Loyalty Points (status currency): Determines your elite tier. Called Tier Points by British Airways and Loyalty Points by American Airlines. Resets at the end of your qualification year - only your current annual total counts toward status. Update this after every flight credits and when your new qualification year begins.

  • Miles / Avios (redeemable currency): Your spendable balance for flights, upgrades, and rewards. Called Avios by British Airways and AAdvantage Miles by American Airlines. Does not reset — it accumulates over time. Update this whenever new points credit or you redeem points for a reward.

What Updates Automatically After Saving:

As soon as you save - whether via flight-level edit or bulk update - the following sections of TravelSmarter reflect the new figures:

  • Loyalty Wallet - Balance column and estimated value update immediately.

  • Dashboard - Points summary and Smarter Advisor briefing refresh.

  • Status page - Tier Points progress bar adjusts to your real position.

  • Goals - All active goal progress percentages recalculate.

  • Analytics - Estimated portfolio value and points-per-dollar rate update.

How Often to Update Your Balance:

  • After every flight credits - typically 3–7 days after your flight. Check your airline app or account statement.

  • After credit card spend credits - card points usually post monthly with your statement cycle.

  • After a promotion or bonus credits - promotional Avios can take 4–6 weeks to appear.

  • At the start of a new qualification year - your Tier Points reset to zero. Update TravelSmarter so your progress tracking starts fresh from the correct baseline.
