How do I add more follow-ups or LinkedIn messages in Twain + Clay?

How to add follow-ups and LinkedIn steps to a Twain campaign running from Clay, up to nine steps, and what those extra steps cost in each mode.

Adding follow-ups and LinkedIn steps to your Twain + Clay sequence

You can generate not just email steps but also LinkedIn connect requests, follow-ups, or extra messages, up to nine steps per campaign. Here's how.

Before you start: Make sure you have a Twain agent with an active campaign in Clay. If you're new to Twain, see How Twain Agents Work first.

1. Find the campaign you're using

  • In Clay, identify which Twain campaign your Twain: Generate Sequence column points to.

  • Open that campaign in Twain.

2. Add a new step in Twain

  • In your campaign, click Add Step.

  • Examples: "LinkedIn follow-up" or "LinkedIn connect request note."

  • Keep the same structure. Just add the new message step.

What extra steps cost

On Base and High, the cost is per lead, not per step. A nine step sequence costs the same as a three step one: 1 credit per lead on Base, 2 on High.

On Ultra, the cost is per message step, because Twain plans each step separately. Ultra starts at 10 credits for the first step and adds 2 for each step after, so a longer sequence does cost more.

3. Rerun the enrichment in Clay

  • Back in Clay, rerun the enrichment for your leads.

  • Twain will now generate four (or more) messages instead of three.

‼️ Rerunning costs credits. Unlike the web app, where re-generating a lead in the same campaign and mode is free, a rerun in Clay sends a new request to Twain and is charged again at the cost of the mode in that request. Only rerun the rows you actually need the extra steps for.

4. Push messages to your tools

  • Create new columns in Clay for the added steps.

  • Push:

    • Emails to Smartlead, Instantly, Lemlist (or similar).

    • LinkedIn steps to HeyReach (or other LinkedIn tools).

Pro Tip: You can add up to nine outreach steps per campaign, combining email and LinkedIn for a full multichannel sequence. For what each mode costs, see What is a credit, and how does it work?
