Does the NFC tap work through a phone case?

NFC works through most phone cases. Metal, thick rugged, or card-holder cases can block the signal. Use the QR code as backup.

Does the NFC tap work through a phone case?

Yes, NFC works through most standard phone cases. Very thick cases, metal cases, or cases with built-in card holders may block the signal.

Cases that work fine

These case types work fine with NFC:

  • Standard silicone or plastic cases

  • Thin leather cases

  • Most wallet-style cases (without metal plates)

  • Clear cases

Cases that may cause issues

These case types may block the NFC signal:

  • Metal cases or metal-backed cases: Metal blocks NFC signals completely

  • Very thick rugged cases: The extra thickness can put too much distance between the card and the NFC reader

  • Cases with magnetic plates: MagSafe-compatible cases are usually fine, but aftermarket magnetic mounts or metal plates can interfere

  • Cases with built-in card slots: If there are credit cards or other NFC cards inside, they can interfere with the signal

What to do if NFC is not working through your case

If NFC is not working through your phone case:

  1. Try removing the case and tapping again

  2. If it works without the case, the case is blocking the signal

  3. Try tapping a different area of the phone (top for iPhone, centre-back for Android)

  4. Use the QR code on the back of your V1CE card as a backup. It works regardless of phone case

MagSafe and V1CE

MagSafe cases on iPhones generally work fine with NFC. The MagSafe magnet ring is positioned to avoid the NFC reader. However, if you have added an aftermarket metal plate or magnetic mount, it may interfere.

Tips

For reliable taps with any case:

  • Every V1CE card has a QR code backup, so even if NFC is blocked, sharing still works

  • If you frequently encounter thick cases at events, mention the QR code option
