Does the NFC tap work through a phone case?

NFC works through most standard phone cases. Thick rugged, metal-backed, or card-holder cases can block the signal — use the QR code instead.

Does the NFC tap work through a phone case?

Yes, NFC works through most standard phone cases. Very thick cases, metal cases, or cases with built-in card holders may block the signal.

Cases that work fine

These case types work fine with the NFC tap:

  • Standard silicone or plastic cases

  • Thin leather cases

  • Most wallet-style cases without metal plates

  • Clear cases

Cases that may cause issues

These case types may block the NFC tap:

  • Metal cases or metal-backed cases: Metal blocks NFC signals completely.

  • Very thick rugged cases: The extra thickness puts too much distance between the card and the NFC reader.

  • Cases with magnetic plates: MagSafe-compatible cases are usually fine, but aftermarket magnetic mounts or metal plates can interfere.

  • Cases with built-in card slots: Credit cards or other NFC cards inside can interfere with the signal.

What to do if NFC is not working

If NFC is not working through your case, try these steps:

  1. Remove the case and tap again. If it works without the case, the case is blocking the signal.

  2. Try tapping a different area of the phone. On iPhone, hold the card near the top of the phone. On Android, hold the card near the centre-back.

  3. Use the QR code on the back of your V1CE card as a backup. It works regardless of phone case.

If you have already tried the checklist and the tap still fails on iPhone

If you have already tried tapping the back of the V1CE card against the top of the iPhone with the case removed and the tap still does not register, the most common remaining cause is technique. iPhone and Android NFC antennas sit in different locations, and the precise contact point matters.

What V1CE recommends next:

  • Request the iPhone tapping technique video from V1CE support. V1CE will send the iOS demonstration video on chat.

  • For metal V1CE cards specifically, hold the back (PVC side) of the card to the iPhone, not the metal front. Metal can shield NFC.

  • Book a one-on-one troubleshooting call with V1CE customer success: calendly.com/d/crjv-p3f-jw6/v1ce-onboarding.

If technique is correct and the tap still fails after a one-on-one call, V1CE will reset the card from its end and reship a replacement at no extra cost.

MagSafe and V1CE

MagSafe cases on iPhones generally work fine with NFC. The MagSafe magnet ring is positioned to avoid the NFC reader. Aftermarket metal plates or magnetic mounts may interfere.

Tips

For reliable taps:

  • Every V1CE card has a QR code backup, so sharing always works even if NFC is blocked.

  • Ask the other person to unlock their phone before tapping.

  • Hold the card steady for 1 to 2 seconds.
