Does the NFC tap work through a phone case?

Yes. NFC works through most standard phone cases. Very thick cases, metal cases, or cases with built-in card holders may block the signal.

> Other ways people ask this: "Why isn't my card working when I tap?" • "My V1CE card won't tap" • "Where do I hold the card on my phone?"

Cases that work fine

• Standard silicone or plastic cases • Thin leather cases • Most wallet-style cases (without metal plates) • Clear cases

Cases that may cause issues

Metal cases or metal-backed cases: Metal blocks NFC signals completely • Very thick rugged cases: The extra thickness puts too much distance between the card and the NFC reader • Cases with magnetic plates: MagSafe-compatible cases are usually fine, but aftermarket magnetic mounts or metal plates can interfere • Cases with built-in card slots: Credit cards or other NFC cards inside can interfere with the signal

What to do if NFC is not working

  1. Try removing the case and tapping again

  2. If it works without the case, the case is blocking the signal

  3. Try tapping a different area of the phone:

iPhone: Hold the card near the top of the phone • Android: Hold the card near the centre-back

  1. Use the QR code on the back of your Smart Card as a backup. It works regardless of phone case

MagSafe and V1CE

MagSafe cases on iPhones generally work fine with NFC. The MagSafe magnet ring avoids the NFC reader. However, aftermarket metal plates or magnetic mounts may interfere.

Tips

• Every V1CE Smart Card has a QR code backup, so sharing always works even if NFC is blocked • Ask the other person to unlock their phone before tapping • Hold the card steady for 1 to 2 seconds
