Accepting payments with Tap to Pay on iPhone

Accept payments right on your iPhone - no card reader needed.

Written by Turjo Khan

Tap to Pay on iPhone lets you accept in-person payments at your event using nothing but the iPhone already in your pocket. Attendees tap their contactless card, iPhone, or Apple Watch, and the payment is collected in the Viewcy Check-in app no extra hardware, no card reader, no cables.

It's built right into the same check-in flow you already use to add guests at the door.

What you'll need

  • An iPhone XS or later, running the latest version of iOS.

  • The latest version of the Viewcy Check-in app (download it from the App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/viewcy-check-in-app/id6670772441).

  • A Viewcy account with Stripe connected for payouts. (If you already collect card payments through Viewcy, you're set.)

  • To be in a supported country/region. If Tap to Pay on iPhone isn't available where your account is based, the app will let you know.

Tap to Pay on iPhone is an Apple feature and is only available on iPhone. It isn't available on iPad or Android devices.

Turning it on

You can enable Tap to Pay on iPhone in two ways:

During setup: The first time you open an event's guest list, you'll see a one-time welcome screen introducing Tap to Pay on iPhone. Tap "Set up Tap to Pay on iPhone" to get started.

Any time, from Settings: Tap your profile icon in the top corner → SettingsTap to Pay on iPhone, and switch it on.

Either way, you'll be asked to:

  1. Review and accept the Terms & Conditions. Tap to Pay on iPhone has its own terms from Apple and Stripe, you'll see links to review them, then tick the box to agree.

  2. Confirm on Apple's setup screen. iPhone runs a quick, one-time setup to get your device ready. You may be prompted to sign in with your Apple Account.

  3. Read the short "How to accept a payment" guide. This appears automatically the first time and is always available later under Settings → How to accept a payment.

That's it, you're ready to take payments.

Taking a payment at the door

  1. On your event's guest list, add a guest as you normally would.

  2. Choose Tap to Pay on iPhone as the payment method.

  3. Confirm the amount and tap the Tap to Pay on iPhone button.

  4. When you see "Hold card near top of iPhone," ask your guest to hold their contactless card, iPhone, or Apple Watch to the top of your device.

  5. Wait for the confirmation. You'll see a clear result:

    • Payment Approved ✅ - the guest is checked in.

    • Payment Declined or Timed Out - tap Try Again, or cancel and choose another method.

Sending a receipt

After any payment, tap Send receipt to share a digital receipt with your guest through Messages, Mail, or any channel you choose. Nothing is printed and no extra paper is needed.

Accepted payment methods

Tap to Pay on iPhone accepts:

  • Contactless credit and debit cards

  • Apple Pay

  • Apple Watch

  • Other digital wallets that support contactless payments

Fees

Tap to Pay on iPhone uses the same low, transparent Viewcy pricing as the rest of your in-person payments - see Understanding fees on Viewcy.

Troubleshooting

  • "Update to the latest version of iOS to use Tap to Pay." Your iPhone's iOS is too old. Open Settings → General → Software Update and install the latest version.

  • "Tap to Pay is only available on iPhone." You're on an iPad or another device - switch to a supported iPhone.

  • "Tap to Pay Unavailable." Tap to Pay on iPhone may not be supported in your account's country yet, or your Stripe account isn't connected. Check that your payout account is set up, and reach out to us if it persists.

  • The payment won't read. Ask the guest to hold their card or device steady against the top of your iPhone, and make sure no thick case is blocking the antenna.
