The Goal Review System — How Strategic Changes Work

Written by Rob Hale

The Goal Review System (GRS) is where all major plan changes happen in VRTO. It's the single transition mechanism between CUT, BUILD, and MAINTAIN phases — and the only place where significant adjustments to your nutrition targets, training program, and activity levels are applied.

Nothing changes automatically. Everything goes through the GRS, and everything requires your confirmation before it takes effect.

What triggers the Goal Review System

The GRS can be entered from several different points:

  • Manual goal change — initiated by you from your profile settings at any time

  • Weekly check-in — when you indicate your goal is no longer relevant

  • Goal achievement — when you reach your target weight or physique goal

  • Program completion — when your current program's duration elapses

  • Reverse diet completion — when your calorie ramp reaches your maintenance TDEE

  • Quarterly review — automatically triggered at the 90-day mark

Regardless of what triggered it, all entry points lead into the same two-stage process.

Stage 1 — The GRS Quiz

A lightweight re-calibration survey that updates the system's understanding of where you are right now. It covers your current weight and estimated body fat, your activity level, your goal weight and pace, your nutrition approach, and your training preferences.

The quiz is designed to mirror the structure of your original on-boarding quiz — so your updated inputs recalculate your plan using the same methodology as the first time. Current values are pre-filled wherever available, so you're only updating what's changed.

Stage 2 — The GRS Hub

The GRS Hub presents your recommended changes for review before anything is applied. It shows:

  • A plan comparison — your previous settings vs. the updated recommendations (e.g. Phase: CUT → BUILD, Tempo: Slow → Moderate)

  • Section-level guidance across training, nutrition, cardio, and steps — each with context explaining the recommendation

  • Program recommendations via the Program Recommendation Engine — your top three matched programs for your updated goals

  • Macro recommendation updates — with the option to apply new targets or keep your current settings

  • Phase transition context cards — education on why certain strategies matter for your specific transition (e.g. reverse dieting when moving from CUT to BUILD)

You can accept or dismiss each recommendation independently. Navigating away from the Hub does not apply any changes. Nothing is written to your plan until you confirm.

ℹ️ The GRS Hub persists until you explicitly confirm your configuration. If you start a review and don't finish it, you can return to it — your in-progress selections are held until you either confirm or start the review again from scratch.

Coaching guardrails

Across the entire coaching system, VRTO enforces several non-negotiable rules:

  • No silent plan changes — all adjustments are visible and require confirmation

  • No automatic training program switches — programs only change when you confirm them

  • Strategic adjustments only inside the Goal Review System — not through profile edits or nutrition sliders

  • Program switching only at week boundaries — a program switch initiated mid-week takes effect at the start of the next training week

💡 You can initiate a Goal Review at any time from your profile — you don't have to wait for a trigger event. If you feel like your current setup isn't right for where you are now, starting a re-calibration is the right move.
